Losing your best mate

Getting home from football on Saturday arvo I found my best friend had quietly passed away in the backyard. 12 and a half years of loyalty and companionship will never be replaced. Gutted doesn't truly reflect my sadness today

Sad to hear Choccies, I got home last night after doing 10 hours of phone book deliveries to find our 6 y.o staffy has gone out to explore the neighbourhood.

At least she is now with her son. He passed away in December and she was never the same when he went.
Never underestimate the joys and influences of owning a pet...
When telling my 6 year old son on Sunday his response was "Cool, we can get a new dog". Ya gotta love kids and their simple outlook on life...

The Wolfhound was 90 Kg, not fat for the frame, but they are prone to heart failure as they age.

Our family dog died while I was in Japan. About 5 years ago now. He was a very good mate.

Had to have my dog put down on the moning of the 2006 Grand Final.....worst start possible to what turned out to be a great afternoon....lucky the Eags had a win that day!

We have a very hard decision to make regarding our dog. She is 10 years old, and has extremely bad allergies - she is allergic to everything you can imagine, and gets very bad skin irritations and loses her coat. Also get ear infections. She is a great natured dog, and we had her before we had the kids, so she used to go everywhere with us. Her allergies have made it impossible for her to come inside the house now, and she is on a lot of medication on a daily basis. We have spent large amounts of money over the last 6-7 years on tests, and various drugs to get her right, but nothing has really worked. Im talking around $2500-$3000.

Im thinking enough is enough. She has cortisone injections, which usually give her 5-6 weeks of relief, but the last injection was lucky if it helped her for a week. She looks terrible, and is basically an outcast from the rest of the family as the kids want nothing to do with her as she is very smelly. Bathing does nothing to help.

Im dreading doing it, but i think its time to have her put down. I cant get my head around the idea of putting her in the car, taking her to the vet and not bringing her home though - she loves going in the car and it will be heart-breaking to see her gladly jump into the car, all excited. She is a great natured dog, we wouldnt have let it go on this long if she wasnt.

This causing some sleepless nights at the moment. Im planning on talking to the vet today about it, they obviously know us and her very well !!!

Get a friend to take her then. Don't look at it as bad thing, look at it as a final relief from all the pain that she goes through constantly, good luck anyway mate.

We have all had to make that decision Felch, all I can say is if you know she is in pain then there really is only one ( very tough ) outcome.

You would love her too much to let her live in pain.
