Seems like the people in the Riverland have plenty to worry about. I hear that 200+ people gone from Berri Estates and that Banrock Station has 'hit the wall".
A couple of others will announce shortly that they too, are buggered.

Berri juices has made approx 35 people redundant and will possibly be moving out of Berri in the first quarter next year, i really hope they don't as they do employ a significant amount of people in the area. Not good to hear about Banrock Station, they have employed a fair few of my extended family for a decent amount of time.

There will be many wine vats left empty up there next harvest.

Apparantly vandals have got in and smashed their computer systems and a lot of stock over the weekend, causing a considerable amount of damage.

Over 500k at this point.

I wonder who might have done that.....

So are we to assume that the "security" people and their systems have been made redundant too for this to happen?

Earlier this year a friend of mine's wife lost her job at Renmano Wines after over 10 years employment. Things are tough in the riverland at the moment, although the price of riverfront property would suggest otherwise.

Have to admit the Riverland looked a bit sad & tired when up there recently. Barmera is a ghost town, not just because of the rapidly drying up lake which is absolutely heartbreaking. Facilities haven't changed in eons, many shops on main street closed down. Lots of grapes rotting on vines, vines being ripped out. Loxton however, which it always has, looked to be proseperous and busy, Renmark too to an extent, but couldn't say that for my impressions of some of the other towns.

There is just so much to say on this issue.
If the primary producers/ irrigators could have a bigger allocation from their water licenses it would certainly help, but at 2% currently, with further increases it won't help at the moment.
I can only hope that some of the shack owners, continously breaking current water restrictions by watering their lawn for 4-5 hours per day, this during the same week when it rained every day, read about this and ask themselves what is more important, their lawn which is being fed with more than enough rainwater this winter or the poor people who are losing jobs because of the lack of water in the river.
For every 1000 shacks between Hindmarsh Island and Waikerie, there would by 750 of them pumping 100's of litres of river water each onto their lawns illegally.
Most won't even see their house for a few months either.

Not really,I have a heap of distant relatives,who I've never met, but I'm a member of the Riverland Cruising Boat Club, and moor a boat in Morgan, so I know a fair number of Riverland people as friends.

Did anyone else see on the news the story about someone having allegedly broken into the juice factory and damaged machinery. They have had to shut down the facility in the mean time.

Yes, in excess of 500K damage, they knew what they were targetting.

looks like someone wasn't happy with losing their job. Understandable to be upset but doing that much damage has certainly not helped their cause or the cause of the workers stil employed at the site.

It's quite depressing when we see on the news constantly that NSW and QLD are having record rainfalls and unfortunately, it is falling in the wrong area, not in the catchment areas.
