What a place... Go to the footy at Elizabeth and by quarter time can't get a hot Pie or Pasty, then at half time get to the front of a small queue (about 10 people) and there are 3 warm sausage rolls.

Should have been expecting a reasonable crowd and catered accordingly. Even the deep south oval has decent catering and they only get small crowds.

Oh no...they wont respond well to this, there will be some mudslinging going on here. Still cant beat Westies when it comes to catering.

Catering was good for me, went to the BBQ and got a beautiful steak sandwhich and a sausage sandwich very quickly.
Even room for everyone to have a pee in the breaks. I dont like the travel factor but give me Elizabeth's facilities over Prospect's current debacle anyday.

Ive done it on many occasions, I call things as I see them without bias but a lot of people have selective memories.

On the whole the facilities are adequate, there is plenty of space, two canteens, two bars (there should be a bar on the outer wing) and the toilets are of a good size despite being ancient.

BUT they do have a bit of a history of running out of hot food early at Elizabeth Oval, maybe they are extremley conscious of being stuck with left over food, maybe the predicted bad weather had there crowd estimate further down.

It's dissapointing when your hungry and want something hot and they have run out but there not the only ground in the SANFL this happens.

That would be a bit of an odd way of thinking. The food itself costs relatively little, and the major costs are providing the facilities to heat or cook, and the staff to serve.
So, it would be better to have food to throw away, or give to people who need it, than have staff standing there not taking money because the food has run out...

A couple years ago, there was the Eagles v North in the unders at Prospect and the people in the canteen gave the team some left over pies and pasties.

Do they still use South Gawler Bakery pies at Elizabeth Oval? If so, I'd imagine their profit margin wouldn't be as great.

They ran out of pies/pasties/sausage rolls by halftime when North played there a few weeks ago. Michael Handby did play in the twos though so he would have accounted for most of them during the first half of the league.

The canteens at Elizabeth Oval are now run by the club. They couldn't find a charity that wanted to do it this year. Just remember don't abuse us who are working in there if we run out of hot food it is usually beyond our control. Everyone involved in the canteens this year are new to it and are trying their best to get it right. The canteen near the scoreboard were having trouble with the pie warmers on Saturday so that was why they had no hot food available at one stage.

If the clubs are running it they have the wrong person in charge - when did any commercial food outlet Maccas or HJ's - ever run out of stock??

I could be totally wrong but isn't there very strict laws in place about donating food thats not in cans.

Psyber, understand your frustration at not being able to get hot food that early in the game.

But some points to remember:
As for Hungry Jacks and Maccas not running out of food. Last time I looked their trade is for 7 days a week not 1 day a week or 2 days a month 10 days out of 6 months. They would also have a lot more analysis on what they are going to sell on a day to day basis. Go to a KFC late at night and it is not uncommon for them to have run out of certain product.

Clubs could order more stock and then freeze uncooked stock for the next game to reduce wastage. Then they will get complaints about quality of stock. Also it takes a lot longer to cook the frozen product than the fresh product.

Also estimating for crowd numbers is not an easy thing. If you said 3000 were going to turn up and then 3600 attend that's a 20% addition, not easy to go and get extra product/stock whilst the game is in progress. Remembering most hot food has a best before date of 1-2 weeks and you need the cold room / freezer space.

I know this doesnt help on the day but all clubs / business are conscious of wastage especially in these tougher times. None the less it is annoying.

lets just play every match at richmond their catering is second to none to my knowledge they never run out of food and it is clearly the best service.
i wont buy food from the bay it is crap i would rather go down jetty road to eat.

I wasn't there jamdog. I was just making a point, based on basic business principles, that the risk of losing money from a little left over food thrown out was probably less than the likely cost of lost sales from not having enough on hand to even get past the early part of the day.
