Anyone get them, know a good cure for them and no a reason they might happen?
Im not talking about the sort after you get smacked in the face either, the ones that just happen for no apparent reason.

Moving offices from level 20 to level 2 can help!
Not a problem I've suffered Wedgie so can't really offer much advice.

Had them regularly up until 2 years ago when i had surgery. Initially when i went to the Ear, Nose, Throat specialist i was surprised to learn the front part of my nose was broken (ie no cartilage in the front part of my nose), I have no idea how long it had been like that for, or what had actually caused it, but looking back it must have been 5 or 6 years maybe.
I think it was probably caused by a stray football hitting me in the head some time. I've had about 2 very minor nose bleeds since the operation. An operation is a last resort though, other than this i think a GP can cauterize the problem nostril.

Or at least have a manicure first...unless of course you have a taipan up there
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nose_bleedI get nosebleeds occasionally and for no apparent reason...I just sit with a mountain of tissue and let them stop naturally.
oooh hang on...she said reading on a bit further...you're not pregnant are you???

I used to suffer from them on a weekly basis, for probably half my life, for some reason these days they seemed to have stopped thankfully.
Just tilt ur head forward and pinch the bridge of your nose .. Standard advice I guess but the quickest way to stop it (although I reckon it leaves it ready to go off again).
Other advice I received from a smoker was to blow the smoke out through your nose when it's belleding .. Buggered if I know whether that works or not though lol

I used to get them .And then they started up again and the daughter gets them as well.Mine seem to happen when the nose is blocked and all of a sudden a trickle (like a runny nose) then it just gushes out.not sure why not sure what causes the nose to block either.and its not during hay fever season. If its at night the next day I get another blood nose .
Way back when I was a kid the old man would make me put a piece of cardboard in my mouth between the top lip and teeth.Yep like a mouth guard. And it did stop the blood .An old boxer/boxing coach taught him to do that

.

I eventually had to get a bulging blood vessel in my nose fused (somehow) by a nose specialist after continual nose bleeds over 5 years or so. My GP referred me.
The explanation was that it would bleed, scab over but not heal properly before it burst again, and so on and so on.
Since the fusing (harmless 5 minute procedure, about $100) no problems.

some causes:
nose picking
large exposed blood vessels in nose
high temperatures
treatment:
Head tilted forward, pinch nose just below the bone, ice on back of neck to cool the blood supply to the head, crush some ice and suck on it, when the flow stops gently blow out the big clot to stop pressure on the area.
If they persist regullary ask your GP to see an Ear Nose and Throat specialist, I had mine corderised (Spellinig??) about 25 or 26 years ago, only started getting them again the last couple of years, our daughter is probablly going to have to have hers done.
PS: there's nothing worse than the smell of burning flesh, especially when it's burning inside your nose

Thanks for the info guys, I found GWWs and Hondo's advice particularly useful.
Got smacked a few times in the nose when playing cricket (never wore a helmet) so that might account for it.

Swim in the ocean my friend.
The salt water will cleanse and harden your entire body.
Drying your nasal passages, and cleaning your sinuses...

I have had these ongoing for the last 20 years and it is very frustrating. I have seen a ENT specialist over ten times and had both nostrils cortirized each time and whilst that last for about 3 months i always end up getting them again. None of the ENT's i have seen have ever mentioned surgery so i may have to ask about that next time i go. I get them more frequently in the warmer weather but i do get them in the winter as well. The ice or a cool towel on the neck is a good way to assist in stopping the bleeding as well as pinching the nose and leaning forward.
