Thought I'd start a thread for any weird/funny news articles that posters want to share, I'll start it off with the following:

Excuse me, there's a giant penis on your roof

DAVID MURRAY, LONDON

March 25, 2009 11:15am

A STUDENT has some scrubbing to do after his parents discovered he'd painted an 18m-long penis on their roof to get his home noticed on Google Earth.

Rory McInnes, 18, decided to make his family home stand out after watching a documentary about Google Earth.

Armed with a tin of white paint, he climbed on top of the $2 million home in Berkshire, south east England, and set to work.

His artwork remained unnoticed for 12 months until a helicopter pilot spotted it and swooped down low so his passengers could take photos.

Dad Andy thought it was a prank call when a British newspaper contacted him about the painting this week.

"It's an April Fool's joke, right? There's no way there's a 60ft phallus on top of my house,'' Mr McInnes told The Sun.

He confronted his four children, finding his answers when he reached Rory over the phone in Brazil.

Part-way through gap-year travels, Rory could not hold back his laughter as he confessed: "Oh, so you've found it then.''

The image has been compared to the Cerne Abbas Giant, a 55m-high naked figure carved into the hill at Dorset which is said to attract couples seeking to have children.

Mum Clare said: "We don't want any more children, so the idea of sleeping under a giant fertility symbol is rather worrying.''

Mr McInnes added: "We don't want to lie in bed at night and hear couples at it above us.

"When Rory gets home he will be given a scrubbing brush and white spirit and he can go and scrub it off.''

Is this man the unluckiest on the planet for being in the wrong place at the wrong time...twice  ...or is he the luckiest for surviving both...

Man survived both atomic bombings

Japan has certified a man aged 93 as the only known survivor of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, both hit by atomic bombs towards the end of World War II.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on a business trip on 6 August 1945 when a US plane dropped the first atomic bomb.

He suffered serious burns and spent a night there before returning to his home city of Nagasaki just before it was bombed on 9 August.

He said he hoped his experience held a lesson of peace for future generations.

'Horrifying history'

It was already recorded that Mr Yamaguchi had survived the Nagasaki bomb but on Tuesday officials recognised that he had been in Hiroshima as well.

Certification as a hibakusha or radiation survivor qualifies Japanese citizens for government compensation, including medical check-ups, and funeral costs.

His double dose of atomic bombs, however, does not mean Mr Yamaguchi's compensation will increase, a Nagasaki city official said.

"My double radiation exposure is now an official government record," Mr Yamaguchi told reporters.

"It can tell the younger generation the horrifying history of the atomic bombings even after I die."

About 140,000 people were killed in Hiroshima and 70,000 in Nagasaki.

Many survivors fell sick with radiation-related illnesses, including cancers, for years after the bombings.
