Knee Swelling

For the last month, my knee has been swollen.

I have been playing sport regularly and have been pretty hard on it.

I have tried icing it with cold packs, using Nurofen Tablets and using Voltaren Tablets.

It just won't go down, but after i ice it, i get all bruising around the back of the knee. (i think its from putting the ice pack straight onto skin without putting a towel on under it)

Anyone have any ideas or recovery procedures you would recommend?

Seek professional advice.

A doctor.

Ask for a referral to see a specialist.

Not everyone can stand the pressure of Aussie Rules my friend. ;)

I saw Greg Keene (surgeon) at SportsMed. He did my knee reconstruction.
All depends on who you see mate because most have different opinions. Swelling occurs to protect your knee, so you've done some sort of internal damage to it. Hopefully it's nothing too serious mate.

Ice baths are the best to reduce swelling after training and games.

yep, was thinking that tonight after training.

i dislocated my left knee a few years back and sub dislocated my right one a few years back (almost full dislocation).

had problems on and off ever since.

Yeah you might want to get a surgeon to check it out.
An MRI scan will tell you if there's any internal damage. Problem is it costs about $150.

PS. John Bon Jovi is spelt Jon Bon Jovi.

You should think about taking the original advice and giving it some rest, dont bother playing through the pain with Nurofen and other pain killers because it does it no good in the long run.

Missing 3-4 to 6 weeks now will be a lot better than missing 4-6 months in about 12 weeks time if it continues to get worse. Not to mention there is nothing worse than playing with a niggling injury that is getting worse, it keeps you below your best on the field and off it.

I know there is nothing worse than missing footy, I do the same thing but sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture which may be 6 months or may be 10 years but either way you want to be fit and have a healthy knee.

But if you want to continue the best way to recover is like people said Ice immediately after the game and continue to do so for 24 hours while the swelling is still around.

A wade in the Ocean/River or whatever the day after will help your recovery as well, try and stay off the piss while the swelling is occuring otherwise will take a lot longer to recover.

Good Luck with it.

Get it seen to properly. You are still very young and missing a few games of footy now won't hurt you but if you keep playing the damage long term could be significant. I know blokes in their early thirties who can't even kick a footy with their young sons or walk up stairs and other simple things most people take for granted. My advice is that if a professional tells you to rest it then rest it. They know what they are talking about but at the very least seek a second opinion.
