Down in the dumps

This is what happened to a family friend
Friday hired a skip [$380]
Monday pick up at 11-00am
They left thier mobile number with the company, the husband was to get to the house at 10-30am Monday, ring the skip company up and pay for the collection

The skip driver rolled up at 7-45am in the morning almost 3 hours early, no one home
There was no one home as they recently sold thier house and the new owners had not shifted in as yet.
The driver rang the friends mobile phone number, but no answer
The driver then unloaded the skip and dumped the rubbish into the driveway, and left.
Some rubbish ended up filtering into the street, alarming some of the streets residents.

The friends arrived at the house at 10-30am with the $380 cash and saw the rubbish dumped.
They were stunned, and shocked and angry
They rang the company, the company insisted they rang the friends mobile but with no answer
The company policy [?] is if no payment they unload the rubbish

Personally they should have taken the skip, and then chased the $380
After all they did arrive almost 3 hours too early

The friends hired another skip for $570 from another company and had to reload all the rubbish

Where can they complain ?
I have suggested they send a notice to the company to pay the extra $190 they paid the second company
Go to the media ?
Go to the council?
Go to a MP?
Police for perhaps illegal dumping ?
KESAB ?

This is a disgrace, and my friends are down in the dumps.

Footnote
This is only the version heard from my friends

A hate campaign probably won't help your mate if he tries to claim his money back either.

Ring Leon Byner (sp?) on 5AA. He sorts everything out ;)

I would write them a letter asking for a refund of the difference to get the replacement bin. If no response give Leon a buzz

Give it to Mike Rann to fix. He'll pick up the ball - gives him another reason to get in the media

(They'll probably spray paint MHS on the side before the tv gets there)

maybe look at the ACCC website. they show the steps that need to be taken. when my footy boots tore apart i got them sent to adidas and they wouldnt allow a refund, and the ACCC had a template letter which i used and a few days later adidas sent me new footy boots.

http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.ph ... mId/815327. i think this will be useful

I'd try two places -

the matter could be raised with the council on the basis that the rubbish was illegally dumped (and unauthorised) on private property. Also, if it gets in to drains for example it could block them up, and cause pollution.

secondly, the Environment Protection Agency. The point to emphasise with them would be the 'company policy' of dumping and leaving if payment isn't immediately made available. This might be one instance but the 'policy' demonstrates a pattern of behaviour that should be frowned upon.

Re the media, the Messenger would be an option also.

(On a less serious note, if all else fails, tell them to order another one and take measures to prevent it being removed until such time as a 'ransom' is paid to cover their out-of-pocket costs! Of course, it would be at their convenience for the timing - 9pm might be an option! ;) )

Less us know how they get along with their enquiries!

Call the Office of Consumer and Business Affairs. Also ring the company and tell them you will be involve the Office of CBA unless they agree to reimburse the difference.

Exactly what I was thinking. Would have been useful if a few photos of the mess were taken.

Just make sure you have offered more $$$$$ for his opinion than that skip company...... thats how it was proven Leon works.I can just hear it now"Leon has a financial agreement with panthers friends"........ Some on air staff who work there must look at their feet with embarrassment thanks to Leon and his former "opinions".

Rubbish removal is not a regulated industry so I don't think OCBA would be an option.

Used a lot of skips in my time, always had to pay up front unless I have an account with them.
