Stimulus Package

Postby A Mum » Fri Feb 06, 2009 8:06 am

Seems we won't know what's happening until Thursday next week.

What's your feel??
Will the Rudd Stimulus Package go ahead as is??

There's the possibility it will be 'modified' but this is purely a question of whether you think it will go through as is.

Turnbull has stated they will pass it after review. Whether that means any changes...

Whether Turnball thinks it is the correct thing or not after review he will pass it because he knows how many Australians want the money now that they know what they could be getting and they would have him if he stood in the way of them getting it.

IMO Turnbull has hedged his bets, if it turns out the Stimulus package is a flop, he will be able to turn around and say that he tried to stop it.

If it is a success he will no doubt say it was a success because of the minute changes they made to the package.

True Ash.

Probably should have added that is why he would never have the balls to block it completely, it would be political suicide.

Wiil happen, but I'm not sure it should.
I think there is a lot of panicky over-reacting going on, and that it would all sort itself out anyway over the next 18 months without governments magnifying the fear and panic by saying all these "rescue packages" are needed, just to look like they are doing something for us.

A permanent ban on futures trading and short-selling would possibly do more for the stability of the financial system, and the "rescue" is telling the gamblers and con-men they can be reckless again in the future.

Been a Labor man my whole life, even as a nine year old I was gutted by the Dismissal LOL. But I must say I'm not sure about this stimulus package. As Hockey says...we are going to have to pay this back at some stage. I never trust pollies of either stripe whenever they try to rush bills through and this one is a worry for mine.

Hockey? Is that the same guy that said after the election defeat he never realised Howard's IR laws were that extreme? Pay attention to that arse clown at your peril, REB.

I don't think it should be allowed to go ahead.

Turnbull is correct when he says the cost to our children will be to great. IMHO :)

I'm impressed how many people are seeing it as a flawed policy. I heard someone describe it like a leaking radiator and this package is just as case of pouring more water into it rather than fixing the leaks or replacing it.

If you truly believe that you fully understand:

1- the global financial situation and it's impact on economies around the world;
2- how this will impact Australia; and
3- how this stimulus package might lessen the impact

Then you are a smarter man than I, and my job means I should have some base level understanding.

I am sure no-one on this site (including me) is really qualified to know if the stimulus package should be $42b, $20b (what the libs want), $0b or $442b. Hey, even Rudd & Turnbull don't know for sure.

Lets be honest.

What we do know is that the situation around the world is dire  , getting worse by the day and many Australian jobs are at risk. The situation in China (the major impact on what will happen here) is still unclear. The bleeding of Australian jobs started late last year and we now have weekly stories of job losses and businesses going under. This is a seriously bad situation we are facing.
