Good on him. A deserved recipient from the sounds of things. They obviously don't hand these things out lightly. Makes you think though, during WW1 & WW2 there must have been hundreds of instances where such heroic actions went completely unrewarded...
To read about some other heroic actions check out this site:

It does make you wonder how many acts such as this have gone unrewarded, unrecognised and unnoticed in the past. Having said that it does not make this act any less brave, heroic and inspirational. A most worthy recipient of the highest honour that can be bestowed upon an Australian soldier and by recognising Trooper Mark Donaldson it also recognises all the brave and heroic acts of the past and present that we as citizens at times take for granted. What a wonderful reminder to us all of the sacrifices our service men and women have and continue to make for our country.

Poor old Tony hasn't been the same since he discovered his alleged son wasn't his.

WADH. Comparing anything John Howard has ever done in politics to a soldier willingly putting his life on the line to assist others is laughable and insulting. No matter what your politics Howard only ever risked ridicule and embarrassment whereas Trooper Donaldson risked his life and the potential to never see his family again. Courage comes in many forms but there is no way known that Howard ever put anywhere near as much on the line as our service men and women do on a daily basis.
