todays stupid question

Postby Footy Chick » Mon Nov 24, 2008 2:01 pm

At lunch today, I flicked an ant off the table onto the ground and he scattered away.....

my stupid question:

How is it, that an ant can be thrust from such a height and land with no injury?

The height he fell from would be equal to that of a human falling from a 10 story building, we certainly wouldn't be that lucky if we were to fall from such a height....

Anyone?

I think the term exoskeletal may have something to do with it.

My ant had no wings.

Exoskeletal or not, it would still have to have some impact by dropping that distance..

At a guess....

As an ant weighs nothing the density of the surrounding air would be great enough to slow it's fall to enable a safe landing. As a human is far heavier the air density would not hinder the falling speed of such human.

I couldn't actually work out why any one would give a rat's arse about how an ant would fall in the first place so thought I'd try to end the saga.
Wait until Psuedo comes along...he'll have the definitive answer to the question for sure 8)

because I was bored and it dawned upon me whilst eating my sandwich.

the said ant was flung into oblivion for trying to invade my sandwich...so rightly deserved [-(

This was just before I pull the lid off my spring valley juice to read the following fact (found under the lid)

"Tank-driving soldiers are superstitious of apricots"

So if you think my first question was stupid, try and explain that one!

I would have to agree. The terminal velocity of the ant would not be great enough to kill it on impact. Maybe...

Does that mean TERMINAL VELOCITY was not TERMINAL?
