Sorry bayman couldn't find the story on ninemsn but it was on our news here last night. There are not many things that I can't watch but the film they showed was one of them...horrific.

This is the Skynews article....no film thankfully...

I don't get it...

Horses are placid animals... if you can make them drink, how do you make them fight? :?

At least the people fighting have a choice, meaning if you're watching it you know they're willing participants.

This horse fighting makes me sick in the stomach.

Sometimes you read some of the posts on these forums and there really are some unbelievably stupid people. I'm not going to point out the post as someone has already addressed it but FFS!

i think mt79 was just asking whether they bet on it or not (yes they do if you read the story) rather than being stupid, i think he was trying to work out what the reason was that this barbaric act was happening, whether it was gambling, religious or whatever

if he wasn't yes mt's post was stupid & irresponsible

I'd argue it is only a matter of degree Wedgie - once you start enjoying watching violence, even with voluntary fighters, it can be a gradual slide into more blood-thirsty and cruel variations, that gradually up the ante. Besides which many "voluntary" fighters may take it on because they have limited other options - certainly that has been the argument for so many negros in the US becoming boxers...
I took up Judo as a kid, but if somebody got injured there it was accidental.

WTF ! So what's the argument for so many negros :? (African Americans) playing Basketball in the states ? I'd like to see the place where you got that crap from. One would think that Athletics, Basketball & American Football would rule the roost for the African / American population of the States not Boxing.

Also I enjoy watching GOOD quality professional boxing as well as the Amateur Boxing such as what's done at the Olympics. No way in hell would I like to watch some Horses going the tonk, let alone any animal, and I dare say most would be the same. To imply that people that enjoy boxing would be more inclined to enjoy Animal Fighting is pure crap. What a peanut of a comment......

Basketball: Being taller or bigger on average, and also for the same reason our aboriginals feature well in football - more fast twitch muscle fibres as a percentage of total muscle fibres in those humans closer to their hunter-gatherer ancestral roots. The percentage diminishes with the generations away from its being a selective advantage.
Also, less opportunity to do a Peter Oatey and get the education to become a Neurosurgeon instead perhaps?

Boxing: By contrast with others this is a dangerous sport even for those successful at it - Mohammed Ali's Parkinsonism is an example.
While you can get Parkinson's Disease without head impacts - there is even an inherited form - repeated head impacts do increase your risk dramatically, so it is not a sport for those who have a lot of choice.

It is some years since I researched the literature on the subject of boxing for a presentation at Hillcrest Hospital, so I admit freely that I can't cite specific references right now to the relationship between innate aggression on test scales and a taste for aggressive sports. However, it was an area of my medico-psychological expertise at the time the project was being done.
People who enjoy boxing are more likely to enjoy other violent sport, although each will draw their own line along the continuum..
[They are, also, those more likely to object aggressively to anyone saying so...]

To some extent it is related to androgen levels, which is what makes the occasional bloke with two Y chromosomes potentially dangerous to know.
It also works in other species even in infancy. e.g. the Nazca Booby http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazca_Booby

And there are other interesting viewpoints:
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~waldrenm/test.html
All this illustrates a scientific dilemma. Does high testosterone elevate aggression, or vice versa? Endocrinologists tend to favour the former, although a growing number is swaying towards the latter. It's a question of terms and methodology. Still, dominance among women in prison has been associated with higher levels of testosterone, while a study of male convicts found testosterone levels highest among those imprisoned for crimes such as rape and murder.

There is also an Australian study of youth gangs in Melbourne that refers to the culture of enjoying violence as a factor, but that is a major wade through a long PDF.

Psyber, your original post insinuated all people that enjoy boxing would enjoy watching animals fight and mate.
Some people enjoy boxing for the technical aspects and your insinuation was ridiculous and offensive.
No amount of diatribe or going on about different studies will save you this time.
You even put a question mark in your quote so you obviously werent even sure yourself.
I know several people who enjoy boxing and not one of them enjoy watching animals fight which stuffs your offensive remark up there and then.
Im sure there's a minority of people that enjoy poetry and Shakespeare that enjoy watching animals fight but Im not going to make any ridiculous offensive comments because of that.
I enjoy your posts normally but youve really stuffed up here mate and look a complete fool.
Perhaps if your original post wasnt so flippant, generalistic and off the cuff and was worded a bit more accurately it wouldnt be so stupid.
