Potentially one of many low-lying places expected to disappear. Bangladesh's prospects don't look good either and that has a large population.
Our government has initially been unreceptive, presumably worried that accepting one small group will force accepting many more.
Since these people want to retain there identity, presumably they would like another island rather than move into a city, so we would have to consult the occupants of our islands - e.g. Torres Strait Islanders...

Mmm good point psyber.

I don't see how you could put them in the middle of the outback or somewhere secluded where they could continue to retain their own identity... it just wouldn't work on many levels.

Will be interesting to see what eventually does happen, as obviously something will be happening. It also says they have contacted New Zealand as well... so wonder what their thoughts are on the situation. Perhaps we/they should be all working together on this (or maybe they already are).

I thought about solving the middle east problem by offering to lease Groote Eylandt to the Israelis...

Sadly, A Mum, this has been known about by governments for some time. I know it's been on our news and I'm sure there has been the occasional mention in documentaries about climate etc. But as often happens it appears that none of the powers that can help are helping...

My hope is that when our governments are eventually forced to help the islanders they treat them a little better than they did when they removed the people from Diego Garcia (I know it was different circumstances but they never recieved the respect and humanity they should have)

Regards
JAS
