The Northfield Railway

Rumour is about that the State Government are looking at re-opening the Northfield railway line to service the new developments going in and around the Yatala jail site which is to be moved to Murray Bridge. The link here is to the current sites of the Northfield line which suggests that it could be a possibility as most of the infrastructure appears to have been left in place for such a move.

That actually fascinates me.. however Im just trying to figure out where it ended.

The only railway (or anything resembling) I can figure out is that there is still a crossing on Bridge Road near the Bridgeway, I wonder if that's the Pooraka station.

Those tracks would be no good anyway if the government is spending billions on new electric train infrastructure..

Yeah, where the skate park and wetlands are - must've stopped there, or at the Transport building the other side of Bridge road?

I thought the track may have been a direct link between Port Adelaide and Yatala, just for public convenience!

I used to live down the road from the Pooraka railway station and one of the reasons they got rid of it is because no one hardly used it. Mind you the trains didnt run after 6pm mon to friday and didnt run at all on saturday and Sunday :? .

Classic government manoeuvre that one. Run down the service till it is almost useless then close it because no-one uses it.
State governments seem to be doing that with hospitals lately.

Maybe they should close Government House because "no one uses it" ;)

It used to finish just short of Bridge Road (Cnr of South Terrace), in the early '80's I lived at Ingle Farm, it was the quickest way into town and should never have been closed, with the Govt owned land at the time it would not have been difficult to extend the line to TTP and beyond.

They never would have done that though.. less than the cost of setting up the O-Bahn?

When it was first built it did go past Bridge Road, but not very far (thanks to the replica of the first Gregory's street directory) ;). To service the prison I'd assume.

I use to live 15 mins away and it always stopped at the end of South Tce where bridge rd meets. I lived in Pooraka in 1977-1987 :)

But i Dont ever remember the track going further though :?

You bought one? Isn't it great! :D A must buy for anyone that gets into a bit of local history. All the suburbs that don't exist anymore, or have changed names..

I know it was reduced to there, but I'm not really sure when. 1965 comes to mind for some reason.

The Northfield Line was a Branch line of the Gawler line that started at Dry Creek station was opened in 1857 and closed in 1987. The last passenger train ran on 24 July 1987, although some cattle services used the line to the Cavan station (just over Port Wakefield Rd) until 1995.
There were four stations on the line
- Cavan (closed 1987)
- Pooraka (closed 1987)
- Northfield (closed 1987)
- Stockade ?

Northfield station was originally on the eastern side of Briens Road, but in 1961 it was relocated to the western side to avoid disruption to road traffic.

they wanted to link it up the Northfield and a line to Modbury where the O-Bahn is but it never happened as they put in the o-bahn.

Just found my Grandmother's old "sixteenth addition" Gregory's

Northfield station was originally across Bridge Rd from where I remember it in the '80's, and Yatala was also refered to as "The Stockade", Stockade station was at Yatala.
