Was it because of legal liability / insurance concerns?
I vaguely remember that might have been the reason
Or maybe just the sponsors pulled out?

I was in one milk carton regatta, the stains on my legs from the Patt took weeks to come out!
It couldn't have been healthy.
Used to love the Birdman rally.
Also miss the Channel 10 Christmas Appeal, as a kid I can remember staying up for most of it.*

Or the fact that the Pat was not fit for human use

217 0101...

. Gary Meadows used to host it nearly every year, and people would ring up to get the celebrities to either kiss each other, do push-ups, sing a song or on a good night, all three combined. Johnny Farnham (not John back then) often used to make guest appearances also, and the casts of the various TEN shows would come over to read out the donations ("The Restless Years", "Number 96" etc - I may be showing my age with this.
Used to love the Birdman Rally each year, chuckling about those that would simply step into a box and jump off the jetty, compared to those that had very elaborate constructions that would glide for decent distances. I can't remember the exact year it was called off midway through the Rally, during a gale wind (1982 keeps coming to mind), because some of the gliders were being blown back onto Glenelg Jetty and I remember one person getting quite hurt when they blew straight back into the side of the jetty, jarring their back. I reckon that may have almost been the last one.

I wonder who you'd get if you tried calling that number now?
I think they still have birdman rallies in Melbourne, don't they?

It wouldn't go through to anyone.
If you prepended it with an '8', however....

I remember a treasure hunt on the sands of Grange Beach.
Held by some local radio station if my memory serves me...?
Thousands there, when I was a lad... Many years ago....

CK's comment brings back wonderful memories of the Ch 10 Christmas Appeal. I can remember Cheryl Rixon (superb actress from The Box who went on to be 1977 Penthouse Pet of the Year) appearing on the Appeal about 74 or 75. There was a jingle that the celebrities had to sing along with the phone number of 217 01 01 (initially was 87 01 01). Anyway Cheryl was singing along to the jingle and the cameraman did superb close up shots of Cheryl's low cut top as she jiggled and wobbled to the tune of 87 01 01. If only I had a video tape machine in those days....

Its unfortunate all those things from yesteryear aren't around anymore.
As for the Christmas appeal (was that the same as the Telethon??), they still have something like that in Perth every year.

From memory at one stage we had the Channel 10 Christmas appeal and Channel 9 had a telethon maybe at Easter time?
Im pushing the memory on that one though.

Yeah, living on the Eyre Peninsula back in those days its hard for me to remember how the telethons worked. I do remember the "Come on Kylie, you can do it" segment though.

I use the 2170101 number when someone asks me my home phone and I don't want to give them the real one (prefixing it with an 8 of course). Normally this is a line for telephone marketing campaigns and the like that I receive on my mobile. I've never actually phoned it though.
And yes, I still remember the jingle as well that went with it.
I attended the birdman rally one year, and finished up with a broken boat (which subsequently sank) about 1km from shore, and we almost drowned. Good fun.

Birdman Rally?...
Ya won't see him on the paddock 'til next season!
As far as the Milk Carton Regatta goes, not to mention the ski jump near the Adelphi Tce Bridge...
Their fate can be summed up in 3 words
Blue Green Algae (Toxic)

A few more Adelaide TV memories:
- The Channel 10 Coastal Clipper, which use to cruise down the Esplanade, with Paddle Pops and drinks for kids
- The Channel 9 various local kids shows: Super Cartoon Show, Channel Niners, C'mon Kids, all with Robin Roenfeldt, Joey Moore and Winky Dink.
- Growing up with Rock Wallaby and Charlie Wombat on Fat Cat And Friends with John Oster (?) and Patsy Biscoe, and waiting until September when Showbag ads would start appearing on TV. Fat Cat going to bed at 7.30pm each night and pulling the covers up near his chin.
- The old blue analog clock that used to be on Channel 10 at the half hour between shows.
- Some of the other kids shows, like Ready Set Go, when children's TV used to be made in Adelaide quite considerably.
- Channel 9 closing each night with "On This Day", a retrospective of major events that happened on that day in history. Later on, it was replaced when all-night programming came in, starting off with the "Mid-Dawn Show" which was hosted by Bob Pucetti (spelling?), and used to sell anything from pizzas to used cars.

What about the West Beach Lion Park next to Marineland? A free range safari experience where you drove your car through the Lion's "habitat".
Lennies Tavern
Panther Park
(The old) Castle Tavern on South Rd
Apollo Stadium
The bell that was rung at Woodville Oval before the siren was installed.

For someone who's still missing HR Pufenstuf and the Pie Cart at the Chiphouse, you guys have added to my misery by reminding me of all these other great events/places etc.
Also, whatever happened to the 3 Muskateers bar? (as in chocolate, not some dodgy hook-up nightspot)

I remember the final thing that was played on each channel before station close was the national anthem - before the test pattern kicked in...
