The incidence of road rage is nothing new, but the frequency with which you hear about it occurring is definitely increasing. If someone drives like an idiot and cuts you off, rather than try and exact revenge, why not just let them go off and have their accident somewhere else. (I should listen to my own advice!)...

The event that occurred last week at Darlington was terrible. Two blokes kicking to death a man who inadvertently cut them off is a weak and cowardly act.

I hope they catch the bast@rds and charge them with murder.

What are people's thoughts on this topic? Have you experienced genuine road rage yourself?

Every morning driving to work.. Usually in a lot of spots from the train crossing across from Clipsal until I get on to railway tce.

Unfortunately I have to try and keep a civil tongue due to the uniform I wear.. Must admit doesn't always work though.

I do however have a bit of empathy with the wally who overtook a bunch of 50 cyclists and then slammed on the brakes. However stupid and terrible that act was (and hooning off afterwards and lying about it is just gutless) man, who hasn't wanted to do that!

I have seen it as a pedestrian.

It absolutely is the scariest thing I have ever seen.

10 years jail for roadragers.

He continuosly rammed her car until his front tyres were deflated.

Then drove off like nothing had hapened.

at 60kmph.

This being a general thread about people's opinions about road rage (as opposed to one terrible event in isolation), it's entirely appropriate I would have thought. Especially since it was in the news today. Sorry you don't see it that way

We don't have Road Rage that much in Japan.
As a rule people generally make way for one another over here. It is not unusual to see a lane of traffic that would otherwise be travelling between 50 to 60 kph, come to a halt to allow somebody to pull out of a supermarket carpark. You'll sometimes see both lanes stop to allow someone to do a right hand turn in the same situation. It is expected, and people sometimes pull out of narrow streets or carparks, with confidence, believing that people will make way for them. Accidents are rare in my experience.
When I first saw all this I was angry, I was getting cut off regularly by people who usually didn't check to see who was coming. Now I really don't give a rats'. I have benefitted from their system in many situations where I would have been stuck forever if people hadn't stopped to allow me through. You learn to count on it, and I guess that's why people become lazy and forget to check.
There are still dick heads about that take advantage of the harmony, and drive about like true idiots because they understand that people will generally just make way for them. I guess this echoes Cambridge Clarrie's request at the start of this thread. Just ignore the twats and let them have an accident elsewhere.
It takes some getting used to, but the Japanese road sense is far superior to the Australian (/Western) road sense IMO.

Eliminate the cause, ie get rid of everyone that can't drive on Adelaide roads, ie 95% of motorists.
And there wont be road rage.
Simple.

Be a nice drive through the city. The problem is in adelaide that evrything is very stop start and it frustrates people and hence people fly off the handle quicker. Wedgie your idea would work well. Have a very tight drivers test and just watch people start losing there licence.

It all comes down to attitude, like TRB says.

In London, it's completely different. There is so much traffic that folk can't help but cut in and out of traffic and generally no one gives a sh1t, because everyone does it. Sure there are idiots but most accept it and just get on with getting from A - B.

Out of London and definetly in the North where I live, drives are far less tolerant towards each other and get very hot under the collar if someone cuts in front or uses the wrong lane etc. Even when yo can see that someone is in the wrong lane by accident, maybe because they don't know the road layout, you should see how everyone tries to block them out, even if it means creating a dangerous situation.

Last week a car was in the wrong lane and clearly didn't know / understand the 4 lane roundabout layout. It is a new road layout and they got stuck in the outside lane blocking the traffic turning off. I slowed down to let them into my lane and this ar5ehole behind me was going ballistic at me. Funny thing was, he was at there giving me V'ees and calling me a wanker, just because I let a car come in front of me, and then when we both pulled up along side each other at the traffic lights, he couldn't even look at me. My favourite Road Rage story:

Was driving North along Marion Road one morning, got to the end and was first in line at the lights, waiting to turn right into Henley Beach Road.

The lights change, and I begin moving forwards. At that moment the car in the left-turning lane decides he too wants to turn right, and calmly turns right in front of me.

I stamped on the brakes and gave a good long blast on the horn, cursing to myself all the while.

Got to South Road and hung a left, heading Northwards. At the very first set of traffic lights (on George St? IIRC) there is the car who cut me off, waiting to turn right. So I wound down the window as I pulled up alongside him.....

"So mate, you got into the correct lane this time", I said through his open window.

Instantly the male driver and his female passenger turned to me and apologised thoroughly and profusely. "Sorry mate, we aren't from Adelaide and we don't know the roads. We're from Ardrossan".

"No worries", I said. "Ardrossan, that's on the Yorke peninsula right?"

And so it was that I had a pleasant little chat with some country folk on the way to work that morning. Several more pleasantries were exchanged. When the light turned green I wished them well and urged them to take care as I pulled away.

Alright, it wasn't a road rage story after all. But I think it's a nice little anecdote that is worth repeating on a thread about Road Rage

Nice one Psuedo and goes to show that if you take a moment to control your temper you might actually find that the other drivers action was unintentional and get an apology without having to resort to violence.

As a pedestrian if I'd had a pound for every driver who doesn't bother to indicate when turning at a junction, pulling out or using a round about (the mini ones that don't have lanes are the worst) or at night doesn't dip their headlights when they see you walking towards them I would be on a Norwood road trip every season

Maybe if everyone was required to ride a bike to work on a main road at least once a year attitudes might change in a hurry!
