Is it legal for the public to pick up items designated for Council collections ?
I often see people pull up and load up items into thier vehicles from the footpaths.
Can these people collecting be prosectuted ?
If they can be prosecuted is it a Council or the the police that enforce it ?

Pretty sure it's illegal, but really couldn't see the Council enforcing it, as the scavengers just decrease the amount the councils need to pick up hence save them money...

It would be pretty piss poor by the council if they took any action against the "scavengers".

many of these people then use the goods to profit from!

i used to see them down goodwood road in the early hours with a trailer

They can be prosecuted by either the Police or Council, only trouble is who is going to lay a complaint, surely not the householder who is throwing the stuff out, spose the same goes for those going around collecting bottles and cans out of recycling bins, now theres a huge business

when I was living in the Mitcham council a few years ago we had a hard rubbish collection
I had people knocking on my door asking if they could take the stuff that was on the footpath, go for you life I said, it is rubbish

Why would you want someone prosecuted for taking your rubbish away?

When my partner was living in Clearview, she moved out of one unit she owned and into another around the corner. The day after, a girl and her boyfriend moved in to her smaller unit.

They drove up in a "Budget" truck and started unloading. And, I kid you not, the second they put a couch on the ground next to the truck, some guy was trying to take it, claiming it was "thrown away, rubbish".

Clearview is the suburb to get rid of things. Put it out, and if not that evening, by the next morning it's gone.

I put a BBQ out one day, it was gone in 5 minutes - a father and his son wheeled it away. No burner, or anything, just a plate, and the frame.

We had hard rubbish recently (Walkerville), as I was bringing the stuff I wanted to throw away out, people were taking it from my hands before I could place it on the ground. The worst thing about the scavengers is the mess they make when the rummage through the stuff. A guy who took a wine rack from said he furnished his entire unit from hard rubbish day! Including working white-goods and TV.

same thing happened to us!!!!!!!!

its being thrown out for a reason!!!!

we had ours recently here in Werribee. I worked at a place and all our old non working stuff was dumped out the back. We had a tv with a busted screen and two blokes were fighting over it 5 minutes after we dumped it

They are after the copper at the back of the CRT, same thing happened out the front of our place, a bloke smashed the back out of the CRT, took the copper wire and left the rest of the TV for the council pick-up.

No, but they aren't being used to replace English words!

In North Adelaide and around Prospect residents are encouraged to stick a knife through any furniture to avoid people carrying it away. ie; carve up couches, dig holes into cupboards etc..

that story's a bit sad... good luck to him though I suppose... everyone's situation is different...
