A Sign of the Times

My son started his 2nd year of footy training this week so earlier in the week we took him to get a new pair of footy boots since he's growing so quickly.
He chose a traditional pair of Adidas black boots with white stripes.
Why?
He said he wanted something different to the normal footy boots everyone else wears!
(He had red and whtie boots last year)

Thats gold, I remember in 2002 when i got a pair of pumas that were black merging into silver and they were refered to space boots. Today they wouldnt rate a mention. Best boots ive worn were a pair of white umbros with black zedbra stripes through them. They looked spesh but strangely never copped crap over them.

I recall in the 90s there was only one player that wore anything other than black boots in either the SANFL or AFL, and that was St Kilda's Gavin Mitchell (red boots). Amazing considering now that you'd stand out wearing black boots.

Yep, even though the white boots started in the 70s, colours other than black took a while to come in but when it did my god did it come in!!
I started playing footy in 1995 and played through to the early 2000s and even in that time noone in my entire competition (let alone team) had anything but black boots, I had a choice of about 3 or 4 sorts (all black) when I looked around in 95.
These days, crikey!
And its not as though we're dinosaurs, Im only talking about just over 10 years ago!

That's right, Mitchell was still the only one I knew of in 1998. It would be interesting to know when the trend kicked off, Kouta wore those blue boots, but they didn't stand out much of course.

The one's that stand out in my book are Sam Newman and his white boots in the 70s and Dermie and his lime green boots in the early 90s.

Also you had Phil Carman with the white boots, and a number of them had the yellow ones. Brereton could get away with that because that was him - flamboyant. So really after the 70s, it was virtually wall to wall black.

Remember to put some Vasaline on the back on the sock (when the sock is on the foot) just above the heal and also the front at the joint so to stop the blisters from forming and get bigger.

Or thick silver duct tape directly over your heel...

Also, stick the heel of your shoe on the corner of your table and tenderise it with a hammer.. loosens up the leather and helps the shoe mould to your heel.. hence no blisters..

I believe the trend was started by John Sammy Newman.

I think your young fella has made a wise choice Booney. Having technicolour dream boots doesn't make you play any better - just ask Dale Lewis!!!

I'm talking about the trend that started this decade. I can't remember Sam showing off some boots on the Footy Show to get everyone else doing it - you can correct me if I'm wrong. ;)
