For those that studied Italian in High School..

I was just wondering if anyone remembers the old "Avanti" Books? and whether they're still used..
I remember Giorgio trying to pass himself as a 16 year old to buy cigarettes at the age of 13 and the man at the shop calling him a "buigardo". and the class was always calling Dario "In Ritardo"( that's late, not a retard for those that don't speak italian)
I thought Avanti was good value, any other thoughts?
Why has this come about? Who knows why anything popps into my head

I only did Italian in year 8, and my class was the only ones to finish the whole book (for our year level).

Unfortunately, yes I do remember them. "Michiamo Sally" ect..brings back such bad memories of standing infront of the class in silence trying to "speak Italian"..bad times

Unfortunately going to a catholic school we were forced to do it in year 8 & 9 - so there was no avoiding those bl*ody "avanti" books .......
The teacher we had (who was all of 4foot tall) tried unsuccessfully to get us to read from it, so instead she got out the old cassette player and tried to get us to sing to a song called "Gelato Chocolato" ...... She said if we didnt sing along to it then we wouldnt be able to go on the end of year excursion to an italian restaurant. So amidst the next 20mins of fart noises, pencils & glue sticks being launched across the room and people jumping on the tables, she stormed out in tears .....
Needless to say we never ended up going on that excursion

I did a term of Italian in year 8, and we used the "avanti" book. I remember it well. Dario e sempre in ritardo! Io-io-io non sono un asino... Enjoyed it so much I was inspired to take a full year of French the next year. However the term of Italian stuck with me for much longer than the French (until I made a concerted effort to learn French in my adult years), possibly because of the textbook. Avanti was certainly very teenager-friendly.

I studied Italian for three years at Salesians but was always taught by an Irish person (either a nun or priest). As such, I speaka da l'italiano with a thich Irish accent, to be sure, to be sure, to be sure!

Wasn't Anna Amiratto (who married to become Peak) by any chance. She was my teacher and she was a midget!! And yes, same book....

could hardly speak a word of english - not a good combination when trying to control 13 y.o. kids....
She really cracked the sh*ts though one time when one of the girls put her hand up and asked what "fungulio" meant

Mate! We had a French teacher in year 8 that could peel the paint off the walls with her stare, and if that failed then she could easily scrape off the flakes with those wire brushes she kept in her armpits! All I remember were the cassette tapes that went with the course and all of the above along with one year of "Philip Ledoux" and his gay mate "Pierre" was about all I could stand.
Mais, on ce moment je parle francais pas mal. L'ecole a fini, puis j'etudias le francais al'universitaire d'adelaide. C'etais dix years avant, J'ai oublie au peu!

I went to a Catholic School as well and can remember Dario and Giorgio - those books were damn stupido!!!
I remember a mate of mine always doing his homework and i'd copy off him at recess or lunch - to get mine done.. He was a champ for that kind of stuff though... The best bit was the teacher never caught onto the fact that we always made "the same mistake" (not that I encourage anyone currently studying on doing this
)
My favourite memory of Italian isn't actually anything to do with the language.. But when another teacher came running in a very angry mood "Brad, where is Brad, I need to know where Brad is now" and the italian teacher didn't take to kindly to it... Pure Gold it was
