Reading thread http://safooty.net/forum/viewtopic.php? ... &sk=t&sd=a (what is your work), if you could go back in life and do better at school, what ever, what occupation would you chose now. No unrealistic jobs such as footy star but something which you would have loved to do.
For me, working at the zoo in either primate or big cat section- maybe as vet.
<edit> plumber would be good, loads of $$$ easy to start own business. Specialising in gas fitting.

Bar work is over-rated, trust me!

To this day, I wish I had that few extra points to get my Journo degree,...

Otherwise I probably wouldn't mind being an air hostess or a presenter on Getaway or the Great outdoors!

Hmmmm....not easy but I think archaeologist or artefact conservator as I love ancient history. Failing that, my best (still not brilliant) subjects at school were maths and physics so maybe something to do with theoretical physics or cosmology. The only condition for me would be that I could still get into footy and end up right here, right now, although maybe NOT living quite so close to a runway  :D

Regards
JAS

Working in hotel has changed over the years, what you have to put up with
1. Working nights to 4am
2. Working when your mates are out partying, week-ends,public holidays inc. xmas day- only day closed is Good Friday.
3. Being totally sober when all around you are drunk, obnoxious and treat you like their personal slave.
4. Pokie Addicts telling you all their troubles and abusing you for "their machine" not winning.
5. Being blamed for everything that is wrong in the world including the price of beer
and 6. (if you work in Port area) dealing with feral morons who dribble sh1t all night why they got an absolute a** whipping in the 2007 AFL GF.

Good point is you get $25 an hour as a casual to put up with it.

p.s. Didn't mentioned being vomited on, Cleaning up vomit, unblocking toilets just as the night starts getting busy, being robbed by junkies and having to tell mothers, in the gaming room, they have to leave because they have left their children locked in the car in the middle of summer.

Apart from that it might be a good career move.

Law, as the route to becoming an MP, bail out on Superannuation as soon as qualified for it, and move into Astrophysics - which doesn't pay!

I wouldn't make the mistake of being idealistic and going into a helping profession again. I originally intended to stay in public service Medicine but got disillusioned big-time.

Would love to be a Professional Cricket Scorer in England. If I was still living over there, this is what I would have aimed to be.
A travel agent would also be a career of choice.

What aspect of journalism did you want? As someone who did that, I never completed the degree, and it didn't matter a jot. If you actually still wanted to do it and had the circumstances to be prepared to start out (ie, you can cope with a cut in pay), organisations like messenger, leader etc hire non-students as mature age if they think they can write, are interested, and motivated and sensible. Let alone all the new media outlets that are springing up.
Media companies churn through so many people you may be surprised how many options are out there if it's what you desperately want to do, if you're prepared not to start as either the replacement for Kerry O'Brien or the new Mike Sheahan.

Definitely sports... is there anything else ?
Once upon a time I would have even stuck my hand up for a bit of commentary but I couldn't see myself doing that now, except maybe a boundary rider or special comments.. but that's very interesting information Rog... cheers.

For sport, the simplest way to put your toe in the water is to offer to write / report for something as simple as the local paper and something as large as the AFL website or AAP. You can always fit that around your full time job by experimenting on weekends.

As an example, AAP doesn't remotely have the staff in Australia to cover all those sports that require copy, with a story that may be as long as 15 paragraphs and as short as 1-2 paragraphs that runs in a paper, be those Claxton Shield baseball games, smaller scale golf tournaments, satellite tennis tournaments, competitions like the SANFL.
Most organisations will always take copy on an event, particularly if its offered for free or minimal price and is half-decently written (you'd be amazed how many people can't spell). But, THE ONE THING MEDIA COMPANIES DO DO, is that they hire those who are talented who have shown them something. They start at the bottom, and then it's up to talent and drive how far and how quickly they go.
I started at AAP writing 10 paragraphs on a Saturday summing up the five SANFL games that day, as well as providing goal kickers and best players and I could also name 25 really good journos who started much the same way. Just as many good journos started with a full uni degree behind them, but you'd be surprised how many morph into jobs

I would study the laws surrounding OHS&W,in turn use my skills to audit and consult with companies regarding the safety,or lack of safety in their workplace.

From what I know at this point in time, about $150 an hour is the going rate for such a consultant! With very few overheads,a good earner no less.

If not, politics.Who wouldnt? Car,pension at an early age,a group of staff doing all the work for you and you just puppet out the information they hand you.Free gigs like sporting events, major opening nights. What a lark.

Would like to have been involved more in media, maybe to do with music or animation stuff.
Played in a band for a while which ended when I had to move to the country for work - that's one big regret that I never pursued that further...

I would have grabbed that business opportunity in 1994 (was at uni at the time, thought it more prudent to complete my degree that I never wound up using). Would be retired by now.
