Nicknames and how they got them

Heard of a boss the other day who's staff call him "Mirrors" because every time they ask him something, he says "I'll look in to it".

Got me thinking though - nicknames are plentiful but what are some of the CLEVER ones you've come across?

I remember Mark Waugh was called "Afghanistan" - as in the forgotten 'War'.

What others (famous or not) have you come across that are crackers? Work, sports teams, wherever!

Back in the early 1980's I worked for a Sqn Ldr who was hated by everyone (have never met anyone who liked him). His nickname was Exocet...after the missiles used against us by the Argies...because you could see him coming* but there was f**k all you could do about it.

Also new an aircrew Flt Lt who was called Tess because his surname was Tickle.

Regards
JAS

One of my favorite nicknames was for legendary Aussie fast bowler Dennis Lillee...
FOT
funny story behind it too, something to do with his coach yelling at him during training & the name stuck!
(It's an abbreviation of F'n Old Troll)

Being Port types they're not the biggest fans of the Cornes boy's old man so basically it stands for...
(Similar to Carlton's Steve Silvagni 'Son of Serge')
But in the Wharfie's case its 'Son of C*#khead'

I've got some interesting ones through cricket:

One cricketer in the Northern Suburbs was called Cumber. in reference to a vegetable and a certain use of it.

In Loxton we named a team-mate Selley's, because his partner's name was Polly...

Also we had a bloke start playing for us with the surname Lynch around the time of Van Nuygen's death, his nickname tastefully became Van.

I've copped a few nicknames in my lifetime - Kurt, Nixon, Gyprock and most recently Mr Vinyl.

Perhaps the best I came across was due to the person's name rather than their nickname. I studied Accountancy with an international student named Hoo Yu Phuc. We nicknamed him 'not fussy'.
Cheers

i have a few...

a guy i played cricket with ages ago had the nickname SOS because his old man was not liked around the club and was a right pain in the ass. SOS stands for Son Of Smear.

a guy at work we call TTK (Tic Tac K******, his last name is the K). We call him this coz he always comes around to our desks and starts talking for ages at a time and interrupts us when we are busy. So we joke we should give him tic-tacs so we can hear him coming.

We had "Piranha"..eat anything, then a new bloke started who was the same so he got "Japes" i.e Junior Piranha.

Got a mate I play footy with called "Shadow". He was pissed one night in the pub, starting a light scrap and pretty much danced around shadow boxing.
