I tried them and gave up after 10 minutes and sent them a letter instead telling them to close the account and send the money to the specified ANZ one - it worked.

I've done that with the ATO too, along the lines of "Dear Deputy Commissioner, I am too busy earning an income to pay tax on to hang about on your phone queue for 20 minutes or more and gave up after 10, when I had barely progressed in the queue according to the voice over, so would you please direct the enclosed to the appropriate officer............. cc Peter Costello Treasurer."

[And I did send him a copy and got a response from him, and a letter back from the ATO with the matter resolved.]

I did the same with CentreLink recently trying to advise them of my mother's death - they had a WA fax number on a notice to her. They rang me back and promised to send the necessary forms 5 weeks ago - haven't seen them yet.

Good move on those, Psyber - pity that Centrelink have not responded yet (not surprised though!).
Sorry to hear of the recent passing of your mum though - may she rest in peace.

National Australia Bank transaction disputes.

Had my key card stolen the other night and $1000 withdrawn within minutes.

Immediately rang up and cancelled my card.

Two days later, another $500 is withdrawn.

Go into the branch and the teller tells me that I have two active key cards.

One is my new card, the other is, yep, my old card.

They didn't cancel the bloody thing!

They're taking their sweet time in resolving the matter as well.

Might have to give my Republican cousins a bell - give them another cause to fight for...
