After further investigation and the fact that my Nanna got it at the same time, I was surprised to read the following:

Influenza B is an influenza virus that produces milder symptoms than influenza A when it infects humans. Influenza B may occur in epidemic, but it is not a pandemic flu concern.

While it mutates two to three times slower than influenza A, it is still too fast for a person to build a lasting immunity to it.

To date, influenza B is only known to cause infection in seals and humans.

We both went to KI the Saturday before. Our first stop - Seal Bay

I caught the flu from a seal?

 did you go near them or swim with them? I dun want seal flu.

You actually have to stay so far away from them at all times because it's a natural reserve, but there were about 3 sleeping under the steps where Nanna was standing (she didn't want to get sand in her shoes).
Don't play games with a girl who can play 'em better...

I agree but unfortunately US culture is here to stay. People look under the hood now when they check their car levels, we sip coffee at sidewalk cafes and the most irritating of all is our adoption of the new collective noun for everything - BUNCH!
A bunch of water flooded Qld and a bunch of fires raged in WA. Pathetic really

That's a european thing. Started in a big way in the post war years, particularly with the Italian and Greek migrants.

Again must be an age thing. No one I know says this...unless they are being ironic and say it with a fake yankee accent.

Look on the supermarket shelves- full of cookies, ketchup and french fries. The biggest irony is packets of Anzac Cookies- what a contradiction- the most iconic Aussie tradition sold out by yankee-isms. Its biscuits not cookies. we are aussies.
Most kids say zee because they have been saturated since birth with Sesame Street.
Most computer spell checks only give American spelling- how often does sanitize, color, sympathize etc etc etc sneak into our spelling and no-one even notices.
