Filling in the forms takes time and somebody has to pay for the time on way or another.
Even if the insurer will pay, there are often little details that have to be checked while filling out what is after all a legal document.
[And they usually require a current blood pressure reading.]

having my shift changed on friday without my knowledge or permission. :?

Have only found out after the fact by chance.

Surely there's a law against this or something?

This is from my old workplace, may give you an idea.

P.S Spread of Hours prescribed were 0700 - 1800, Mon - Fri

20.3.1 The normal hours of work of an employee may be altered by **** within the spread of hours prescribed in 20.1.2 after giving one week’s notice.

20.3.2 A minimum of one week’s notice of changes in shift patterns, other than for regular changes of rosters, shall be given.

20.3.3 Shiftwork rosters shall specify the commencing and finishing times of ordinary working hours of the respective shifts and shall be posted to give at least seven days’ notice of any change, provided however that the shiftwork roster may be varied without seven days’ notice by agreement between **** and the majority of employees. Agreement in this respect may also be reached between **** and an employee. In the absence of agreement the shift roster may be varied by seven days’ notice of alteration given by **** to the employee.

20.3.4 Where any employee working shiftwork is required to change his/her roster he/she shall be given at least 16 hours’ notice of the change, or in the absence of such notice shall be paid for those shifts worked during this period at the rate of double time.

That will change from award to award or agreement to agreement.

I used to work shift work and we had to have at least 48 hours notice without consultation and approval from all working the shift.
