Long service leave usually can't be cashed out while the employee is still working for the business.
However, some employers may see this as an opportunity to reduce the over heads they have, ie the long service leave they owe you.

I was offered any assistance in this regard when I left my wife, fortunately I scraped through and now have 3 months to go for my 10 year anniversary since coming back here.

EDIT: Employer can also benefit from paying out at your current salary rate rather than potentially an increased rate down the track.
