http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/ipad/we-all-pay-for-solar-scheme-extension/story-fn6bqpju-1226079561192

EXTENDING the State Government's solar subsidy scheme will push up costs for other users, it is claimed.
The Opposition says extending the scheme, which rewards householders with 44c a kilowatt hour for electricity they feed back into the grid, will push up costs for other users.

Existing scheme participants and those signing up by September 30 are being promised 54c/kWh until 2028, costing the State Government $385 million when a carbon price of $20 a tonne is included.

Further amendments tabled yesterday will extend the scheme to new entrants who sign up between October 1, 2011, and September 30, 2013, offering them a lower 16c/kWh until 2016.

Electricity retailers who pass on the tariff generally recover these extra costs by passing them on to all customers.

An Essential Services Commission of SA review of the scheme, released yesterday, questioned its merit, stating: "As a means of abating carbon emissions as a form of climate change response, there are serious questions as to whether or not feed-in schemes are an efficient proposition from a whole-of-society perspective."

Deputy Opposition Leader Mitch Williams said the Liberals would oppose the 10c tariff increase. "It's stupidity," he said. "The 40,000 odd people that have signed up before September 30 will be cheering from the rooftops, but it's only going to raise costs for other users."

Energy Minister Michael O'Brien said the extension would reduce the impact on people working in the sector by enabling an orderly phase-out of the payment. The industry feared up to 1000 jobs could be lost.

ESCOSA evaluated four plans to amend the solar feed-in tariff scheme from the Government, Greens, Opposition and industry.

It said that under its "without carbon price" analysis, the industry proposal to get retailers to bear the price burden was the most expensive. Under the "with carbon price analysis", it found the Opposition's proposal recommending the 44c tariff stay until October, then decline in relation to rising electricity prices the least costly plan.

Nino Piombo, of Hectorville, spent more than $21,000 (with rebates) to set up a 7.6kW system to save on electricity costs, and take advantage of the generous feed-in tariff.

"My house is an ideal spot for solar, and besides the environment it was good to get some additional savings," he said.

The final detail of the solar feed-in tariff bill is likely to be debated in State Parliament tomorrow.

The package I had been looking at has jumped from a net $8K to just over $12.5K now. So it is dead in the water from my point of view.
Had I not already been committed to leaving for the UK in mid-May I may have gone ahead at $8K then, but I ran out of time.

I'm now looking at fighting this form of wealth redistribution by taking up consultancy jobs on offer in Qld or WA in the winter months in future.
Then I won't be using any electricity at home in the months I generally use it most - for heating.
The jobs on offer mean the state governments there pay my airfares and provide free accommodation and a car, on top of the salary.
[ I may also consider work in Tasmania in mid-summer.]

The legislation has now passed both houses of State Parliament ... http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/solar-sch ... 6081612816

Feed in tariff of 44c for all installs before 30 Sept 2011 (guaranteed until 2027), then 16c for all installs from 1 Oct 2011 to 30 Sept 2013 (guaranteed for 4 years).

With the federal government rebate reducing in 2 stages, the 2nd on 1 July 2011 (REC multiplier for first 1.5kWh reducing to 3x from 5x), unless the State or Federal governments change their schemes you have probably missed the boat.

PV system prices have gone up considerably over the past couple of months because the REC price has reduced substantially (from a high of nearly $40 to around $17) each.

I'm sure glad mine is up and running. :D

The Government just wants to tax us for everything.

There mis-management of our taxes is starting to catch up with them/us.

Rudd has travelled so many miles with air travel, he could have flown to the moon...?

Where will this *Carp* stop,

Our taxes are being mis-spent and we all have to pay for it.

Solar Power should be more accessable for all.

The rebate should be greater and so should the tarrifs fed back to the grid at no extra cost to the general public. :D

If the general public don't pay for the rebates or feed-in-tarrif, then who does? :-??

My neighbours tree covers 5/10 panels in shade in winter.

Any lawyers out there....?

My neighbour thinks because he was here first, he has the upper hand.

He is a good neighbour :D BUT he only thinks of himself always.

His Carpy tree out the back always fills my swimming pool with his leaves.

OH. it's a tree of significance....

x2. Do it. You'll get away with it. My dad had a tree he didn't want to cut down and the neighbours did - few weeks later it fell down in rather suspicious circumstances. He went to the council but they wouldn't touch it.

It's not your neighbour's fault, but the dodgy solar mob you engaged to put the panels up ...

You knew the tree was there when you decided to put in your pool and solar panels...didn't think to speak to him about it during the planning stage and come to an arrangement to cut back any overhang???

The Dedj solar power plant is going gangbusters.

Have generated 1.2MWh to date, of which 623kWh has been exported.

True - two of the six quotes I got actually looked at the trees and discussed with me where panels should be put for best effect.
The rest just wanted to put them on the bit of northernish bit of roof nearest the meter box.
I'd have, likely, gone ahead with the guy dedja used, if he could have done the job before I left for the UK in May.
By the time I was back the RECs were down.

There's 2 solar intallations in my street where the panels are on the southern side ... WTF???

Anyway, the inverter needs to be as close as possible to the panels as the losses in the DC circuit are much, much higher than AC. The inverter can be as far away from the meter as you want as that run is AC.

update ...

PV system has been operational for about 5 months. ... approx $800 saving so far, with the next bill expected to be negative. Not bad considering winter was in the middle of the period.

Average daily power consumption (from the grid) has gone from 38kWh for the 12 months from Feb 2010 to Feb 2011, to averaging 13kWh since the PV system was installed in May.

Everything working well so far ...

I haven't read the 5 pages but just wanted to make sure people that looking at getting solar are sure to check that the warranty period out lasted the time it took to pay off the system.
