Fasta Pasta.

Wife rang through a take away order for a main and entree serve for tea. I got there to pick it up 15 minutes later and they had misplaced my order. For their mistake i got the 2nd entree upsized to a main (no charge) and complimentary garlic bread, plus a soft drink whilst i waited for my order to be ready. I will add there was no fuss on my behalf to prompt them into it either.

Always appreciate some great customer service!

This has happened to me before where thy have messed up the order. It's great how they make up for it by giving you an extra entree/main/dessert without a hassle.

I rate having been recruited via an agency for a temporary consultants job at a public hospital in a rural centre interstate for a few months.

Not only will the generous pay supplement my lifestyle and investments, but they are lending me a car for public and private use, and paying my airfares.
On top of that, they are also providing me with a free 3-bedroom, 2 bathroom, CBD apartment near the beach, theatres, restaurants, clubs.

Contrast that with the closing of hospital beds and cutting medical staffing in SA.

Just wondering how "rural" this hospital is if you're staying in the City?

Also just wondering is SA the only state shutting down hospitals/beds?

If they are doing it in Vic as well?

I said CBD - meaning the CBD of a major rural town about 90 Km from the state capital.
It is not just the capital cities that have central business districts.

Vic and SA often parallel each other - state ALP blows the budget in synch in the late 1980's, Lib governments make themselves unpopular cleaning up the debt in the 1990s, ALP comes in and blows the finances again...
(At least Victoria has the excuse of a large Greek population! ;) )

Certainly wasn't having a dig, was just trying to figure out how far out of Melbourne you were...

Though I'll ask again, is it only SA that are closing Hospitals/Beds or is this happening in other states? Truly interested as I find it strange that only SA are closing these down and not anywhere else...

I didn't see you as having a dig.
I was just a bit puzzled by what appeared to be an assumption that only capital cities have CBDs.

I'm not sure what is happening in other states regarding hospital beds and services.
I rather lost interest, for a while, after working long hours for years, feeling burned out, and retiring and moving back to Adelaide.
I've just started to feel an interest again in resuming limited medical practice.

I'd been in private practice since leaving the SA public system (after 8 years there) in frustration.
I worked in Melbourne for the last 10 years until I left full time practice - from 1999 to 2008.
Generally their public hospitals were in worse condition than SA's had been prior to my move to Melbourne.

I should perhaps admit this job offer is in an economically healthier state - in southern WA in fact.

No worries...
I've told the agency I'll also look at Tassie in the summer, and Qld (or NT) in their dry season, too.
I'm interested in what is virtually a working holiday in places I haven't been, with enough free time to look around and the car available.
I don't want to go back to Victoria to work, or work in SA.

I may consider NZ, but they pay poorly, and the UK is an option too, but these days at current exchange rates what they pay is even worse than NZ.
In those cases it would be the working holiday and free accommodation that mattered, and minimal time tied down on call would be a requirement.

Don’t believe everything you read re cuts to staffing and beds. The exercise is about trying to increase efficiency and productivity within the health system. Remember the SA Health budget is 5 billion so trying to cut corners on 100m is only 2%. There have been a number of practices that have become entrenched in certain hospitals over the years that do not stack up against other hospitals. Some staff work there butts off, but others have an entrenched system where their staffing is up to 30% more for the same through put. This of course cannot be looked at in isolation as each area is set up differently so they are trying to standardise so that efficiencies can be brought to bear.

EG the throughput in hospitals is being improved to align with the WA model that is seen as the most efficient. However, each hospital has a different built environment that will impact on the model.

Qld and NSW are cutting much more extensively than in SA and Vic.

Tell that to the SA branches of the medical Colleges who are worried about the ERs and Ambulances being clogged up because of the bed cuts that have already happened.
They were cuts the Colleges were assured were the end of the cuts before this lot were announced.
You have to include those in the overall figures.

The core issue is not pruning for efficiency but having beds that can be opened so patients don't have to lie around on trolleys in ER corridors, or in Ambulances sitting around while other calls on them wait, until the corridors clear a bit.

Only a few weeks ago an acquaintance of mine was kept in an ER for observation for hours, sent home in the early hours of the morning by taxi, and had to be taken back a few hours later then transferred to the RAH for emergency surgery. If there had been a few more beds he would have been admitted hours earlier for investigation and his dissection of the Aorta diagnosed before it nearly killed him. As it is, he has suffered avoidable damage that could be permanent disability now.

It is not just a party political issue.
Under the Dunstan government it didn't happen, and it was relatively mild when Bannon was in power, and was repairable.
It isn't going to be fixed by a change in government this time - with the debt above $11 billion and growing daily and nothing left to sell off and bring the deficit down.
