Sitting here reviewing an academic article for publication. I look up one of the references and start reading through it, to find that the "Simulations and Analysis" section corresponds almost perfectly to that of the article under review. All the authors have done is fiddle with a few of the numbers and add their own method into the analysis. In their credit, these guys plug in a couple of token references to the original source article, but FFS would it be that hard to re-write what you're doing using your own words?

Doesn't anybody do their own work anymore? :?

I am sitting looking over a piece of writing for publishing. I check a listed reference, only to find the "Simulations and Analysis" part is almost identical to the piece of writing I was reviewing. The only thing the writer did was change a few words and sentences around, and also add their method to the analysis. Good on them though, the writer did add a few extra references than the first article, but for heaven's sake, how difficult to re-write the thing in their own words?

How'd I go Pseudo?

Hmmmm. Include a gratuitous reference to the source article in order to boost my personal reference count and I'll be happy to ignore any transient similarity between our works ;)

Regarding the original Masters thesis which ripped off my work: chasing it up would not be worth the bother. I could write to the University in question - which is not Australian, and indeed not one that I recognise as reputable - and point out that one of their students didn't do his/her own work, but I doubt that this would achieve much.

Regarding the article I am currently reviewing: I will make note of the similarity between it and the pre-existing article when I make my report, and recommend rejection of the article unless it is re-written.

I await his counter-argument to your rejection of his article with interest!!!

It is quality gold when you read reviews and letters to the editor in peer reviewed journals, where one author rebuts another authors work or article. The superior use of the Queens English and civilised disproval of the others findings especially when this carries on for several editions is hilarious. More often than not it culminates in a loquacious debate at the next annual conference!!!

There was a quality arguement between two American researchers in the ACSMs Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercse journal about 10 years ago, should pull out some of the journals tonight and revisit it. Funny stuff.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Loquacious debates. Just can't stand 'em....
I love grapes. With grapes, you always get another chance. You know, if you have a crappy apple or a peach, you’re stuck with that crappy piece of fruit. If you have a crappy grape, no problem-just move on to the next. ‘Grapes: The Fruit of Hope.

In Latin "loquor" = to say, speak, tell, declare.
Related: the English word "circumlocutious" = "roundabout and unnecessarily wordy"

If it helps according to the OED what Psyber is trying to say is...the definition is simply 'talkative'.
