Standing Drinking
If a club provides an outside area such as a beer garden that mirrors the hospitality activities conducted inside the club; ie the club has a seated outdoor dining area where meals are served, then seated consumption of food and beverages (alcoholic and non alcoholic) is necessary.
If a club has external playing fields (eg golf courses, bowling greens, football ovals), including areas surrounding those playing fields that provide for spectating, the participants and the people watching/supporting the participants, are permitted to stand while drinking non alcoholic beverages.
Simply put, people participating in the sport, or watching the sport outdoors, can drink water, tea, coffee, sports drinks, soft drinks etc while standing.

I know these rules have been in place for quite a while now.. but is ANYONE actually able to tell me why the **** it matters that you have to be seated, and what the difference is between drinking non alcoholic and alcoholic beverages whilst standing up?!?

For eg at the footy you will quite often see groups congregate arounf or in front of bars then they will in front of the coke van.
Just like you will see more people congregating in pubs and nightclubs than you do at an OTR or local deli.

So is it to ensure social distancing or to stop them congregating at points of sale?

Unless you're sitting on someone's lap you are pretty much social distancing anyway.
It makes for a good joke but it also makes sense.
