The health of any River System is in the individual state's interest and the nations. With healthy rivers comes a wider range of economic opportunity, degraded river systems simply narrow and limit the opportunities available.

gee, that's a really good plan. So, dam the bejeezus out of it on THIS side of the GDR but let it go out to sea on the other side. When this happens, do they all go NA NA NA NA NA?

I've lived in the Torrens gorge for 21 years and Kangaroo Creek reservoir has overflowed about 5 times in that period ... I'd be able to piss more than the amount of Kangaroo Creek water that has flowed out to sea.

another one of my bugbears! If they can pump water IN to the reservoirs why can't they reverse the flow when they are full?

Wouldn't they just stop pumping at say 90-95%? No need to reverse it

my point is we are told how we should use the water that falls in QLD by other states, yet no "solution" has been made for the same problem in the state that is complaining........

whether or not it has overflowed once in 100000000 years, you still have the same issue.

Agreed - I think we should spend millions of dollars investing on infastructure that may be used every 50 years or so. As opposed to it happening year in year out...

There is certainly an amount of hypocrisy by South Australia with regards to the Murray. Adelaide has been unsustainable with regards to water since the 1950's when the Mannum to Adelaide pipeline was commissioned. With an expansion of the pipeline network from the Murray to Adelaide's catchments ever since then, Adelaide takes anything up to 90% of it's water from the Murray.

Until the recent construction of the Desalination plant, South Australia has made no real effort to reduce it's dependency on the Murray.

Not withstanding all that, the point you make with regards to water from catchments flowing out to sea, this is a very small issue in Adelaide as the catchments are highly regulated and with a total catchment capacity of only 1 year's water supply for Adelaide, the catchments are quite small compared to the eastern states and any outflows to sea are relatively small.

the simple facts are these, South Australia is the driest state on the driest continent, South Australia shouldn't have to constantly dredge the mouth of the Murray due to lack of natural flow.
