Well, here Iam sitting outside a pub on Russell St in Melbourne and I can tell you the place is going off. Lots of weird sites but lots of attractive sites too. Feels like Ive been here more than Adelaide in the last month.
We struck rain and fog around Ballarat, can you believe that?

That used to happen every time I went to Hawker in the 70s. The locals said I had to come regularly.

Have been there 3 times for weekend trips. I liked it but reckon it's a little over-rated.

No I don't think so. I mean I do have a funny twitch that makes it look as though I am giving the finger, and a very noisy flatuence problem and we wear our tweed underpants on the outside of our denims and carry around our own portaloo so we don't have to use those dirty public toilets. I guess we should empty it more than once a month but hell who ever suggested there needs to be a socially dictated sense of hygiene anyway? But hell if Adelaide is too country to accept the above eccentricities then good luck to you all.

Melbourne's a great place, lots to like and some things to dislike.

I've visited there a fair bit and enjoy it.

A couple of gripes in general, though.

I get annoyed about Adelaide being called a big country town. It's fashionable to say it, but it's just nonsense. I've travelled a fair bit and if a city of over a million that covers a huge area is a large country town, then there are a lot of well known cities in the world that are large country towns.

Finally, as much as I like Melbourne, to say it's the 2nd best city in the world is pretty doubtful. I think Rio, Istanbul, Sydney, Paris and several others might have some claims.

True, I think it is fashionable to say it, but the people do stare. Just like country folk.

I tell ya what, after being to Hong Kong I wouldn't even describe Adelaide as a country town, more like an outback petrol stop!

good call, if Adelaide was in the US it would be the 10th most populated city in the USA!

Detriot, San Fransisco, Inidanapolis have less than Adelaide.

In fact Washington, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Portland, Washington, Seattle, Cleveland, Miami have less than half of Adelaides population

that gives a bit of perspective regarding the "big country town"

Good post Dutchy, must admit I wasn't aware of that, and I just looked up the stats of the population of American towns and was shocked, certainly a hell of a lot less in most US cities than I thought!
