The difference between Australia and the US regarding guns is massive though. We didn't feel the need or feel it was a right to own a gun.

And the gun industry is no where near as big or powerful in this country.

A little off topic, but such things as car accidents, smoking, alcohol etc all individually kill more people than guns do. Yet because they don't create the 'shock value' of gun related deaths they receive little attention.
We are all happy to accept alcohol, smoking as parts of our society when they kill thousands each yr- so why not guns??

Well for a start the 18th amendment on prohibition didn't seem to go down so well and was repealed by the 21st ...

Many of the right wing think tanks which operate/ generate funds/ shape policy in the US were formed in the 60s/70s as a a reaction to the anti-smoking lobby. They were worried that some of the other inalienable rights, such as the right to bear arms, would come under attack from the big government, particularly the Dems, and so founded groups to ensure that doesn't happen.

I dont think you can compare people dying from the effects of smoking or alcoholism with gun related massacres..

Firstly the smokes and booze usually only effects the person thats chosen to drink or smoke in forms of cancer and liver disease, apart from cases of drink driving, assaults, etc.

Secondly, I think drinking and smoking receives a hell of a lot more publicity. We have TV, radio and print ads against the effects of smoking, as well as the new packaging laws. There are anti-alcohol ads on TV at the moment, as well as warning labels, and ID checks to buy it.

The only time gun laws are brought up is when a major tragedy like the one the other day, but they are quickly forgotten because the perpatrators dead. The Aurora Cinema massacre will come up again once he goes to trial, but once he's sentenced, that'll be the end of that discussion.

I don't think it is the end of the discussion. It's always bubbling away under the surface. If nothing else, the NRA will continue to bring it up to reinforce why people should keep signing up and to ensure no one wishing to change the laws gains any traction in the media.

Talking about the Connecticut school shooting on Fox News Sunday this morning, Republican Congressman Louie Gohmert of Texas told host Chris Wallace that he wishes slain school principal Dawn Hochsprung, who died lunging at gunman Adam Lanza, had an M4 assault rifle during the attack.

Said, Gohmert, "And, hearing the heroic story of the principal lunging, trying to protect. Chris, I wish to God she would have had an M4 in her office locked up. so when she heard gunfire she pulls it out and she didn't have to lunge heroically with nothing in her hands, But she takes him out, takes his head off before he could kill those precious kids."

That right there ladies and gentlemen, is why US gun culture and legislation will never change.

there are a lot of politicians over there that have their election campaigns funded with "donations" from gun lobby groups, I was reading a list of who was and wasnt funded by gun lobbies yesterday but can't find the link right now. This will also impact on getting any anti-gun laws though parliament

I personally think that changing the guns laws will not stop this from happening in the future. Do you really think if someone is that mentally ill that there planning to kill young kids they would worry about having a illegal firearm?

Hows this for a stat? There are more gun shops in USA than McDonald's. And there are 50 gun shops in the area surrounding Sandy Hook school.
Nice!
