There's a low percentage of people who have done that and Adelaide is a small enough place that it can be overcome usually by knowing someone on their friends list. I've sat in on a social networking seminar where it was demonstrated, takes no more than a few minutes to zero in on someone.

People that post their brain farts are not doing so in private, that's for sure.

Luckily I'm very selective with who I add.

I would add that facebook is not well known for its security. Information being private doesn't necessarily mean that the information can't be gotten to.

The system works, as I wouldn't want to work for a company that would sink that low.

I go the opposite direction. When I've had an interview at a labour hire company, I head to facebook to check out what kind of lunatic is taking my future income potential into their hands.

I wonder what they'd do with someone like me who uses none of these Facebook type sites?
Would they think I have something to hide....

Or perhaps they'd realise that you wouldn't be wasting valuable company time on facebook.

Exhibiting open disdain for social networking websites should augur heavily in favour of anyone applying for a job.

Yes yes, we know you're dead against using the internet as a form of communication and only discuss issues face to face with other human beings..

Personally that'd be a turn off if I was an employer, they're too silly to work out the privacy settings.

What rational company wouldn't try to find out everything they could about a prospective employee's attitudes?
And if you've put something on Facebook, even in Privacy mode, you either think its OK behaviour, or you aren't too bright.
Either way you are not a good prospect to employ and rely on.

I'm just too cautious to put too much information about me out in public in a way that identifies me.
What I post here is under a pseudonym, and the email link to this site leads to a totally fictitious person...

Though, a person who knows me well enough socially to know my history could probably work out that "Psyber" is me if they read enough of it.
And, I have met two people from this site in person - so they could identify me if motivated to.

No, I'm dead against using facebook as a form of communication.

What a load of crap. You dont work 24hrs a day, and should only be judged by your time at work, not after you've left for the day.

Here is a trick. You can be known as a pseudonym on facebook as well as forums.

A potential employer of mine would know that I

- sometimes when I'm alone I cover myself in vaseline and pretend I'm a slug
- wonder why the suburb of Semaphore is a haven for lesbians
- has installed the Menstrual calendar app on my phone
- I live in Darwin
- and I get tagged by the missus everywhere we go

I already have a pseudonym Facebook log in to give me access to things I want to see.
That's all I use it for.

However, the philosophy of Facebook is to it for self-promotion or self -exposure - hence your own name.
And regardless of whether you work 24 hours a day or only 8, any sensible employer wants to know whether you are sober, honest, and reliable, and, so, have attitudes that mean you will be productive within the company.
They also want to know you won't steal from them or undermine them from within because of your own philosophical slant.

Psyber, you obviously don't really have a full grasp on what the interwebs and social networking is about. The majority of people over 50 don't.

Agreed.

Unfortunately, try telling the workplace that. I reckon we've had a couple pulled up for their FB statuses.

I must admit I've assumed it was for similar purposes as strutting your stuff at local milk bars, coffee houses, then pubs, used to be.
What else is it then?

I know it suits the telco's to promote the idea your should be in constant communication, and use these sites from your phone, but what does it do for anyone else?

If it was about work or posted during work then fair enough. Other than that its not your employer's business. Also it pays not to have work colleagues added as friends.
