I remember watching the Channel Niners (afternoon kids show) with Robin Roenfelt in 1980 and he announced that someone famous had been killed. I memorised the name even though it meant nothing to me and went out the back and told mum who got quite upset. It was John Lennon.

9-11 was eerie for me.
It is my parents wedding anniversairy and they were out on a dirty weekend and me and my brother were watching Robocop on VHS (weird i remember that)
We finished the movie and pressed STOP and the TV came on and 5 secs later the 2nd plane flew into the building.
Completely freaked us out.

Princess Diana
I was doing door-to-door lolly selling (i was money hungry from a young age) and some grandma goes come in and look at this.
I sat with this woman and she got me a lemonade and cookies and we watched it together. Weird.

Bali
I don't recall

Didn't care.

9/11- Like a few others here, watching Talking Footy.

Diane- Listening to the footy on the radio. I’m fairly certain it was Adelaide playing Essendon in Melb. I remember that they rescheduled the first week of the finals to fit around the funeral..

Bali- Tuned in to a morning footy show on the radio (yep a theme is developing..), but it wasn’t on. Instead it was all Bali coverage.

Hutchence- no idea. Must not have happened during footy season :p
SAFC- 60 years...
StKFC- 58 years..

9/11: Watching Talking Footy, stayed up all night, didn't know if it was safe to go to work the next morning, I was waiting for WWIII to begin.

Diana: Nursing a mammoth hangover, thought it was a bit of a hoax so she could begin a new life.

Bali: Can't remember.

Hutchence: Probably doing what he was doing without the belt.

Was lying in bed watching telly when found out about 9/11

Was playing a U/17's final for Eastern Park at Kilburn Oval when heard about Dianna's death...

Will never forget because it was 3/4 time and we were sitting down with the coach talking to us when I noticed my old man walking towards me, Thinking he was coming over to tell me to 'work harder' or 'present stronger' - typical Father's advice - he told me he just heard on radio about Dianna's death...

The other's can't remember...

Sep 11.
Obviously hit bed early that night and didn't see it "evolve" live. Didn't get to read next mornings paper either for some reason or another. The "bomb" I was driving at the time didn't have a working radio, so it wasn't til I actually arrived at work that I found out!

I recall some discussion amongst psychlogists about the damage the continual footage was doing our kids. My 2 coped pretty well - building towers out of wooden blocks and crashing into 'em with the lego QANTAS plane I bought them! Only time they played with it.

Diana.

9/11 - I was working in a hotel/restaurant in Suffolk, England. I remember it being around 2-2.30 pm and we only had one table of 4 still left in the restaurant. One of my workmates had gone home early due to it being a quiet day. He rang up as soon as he got home and had turned on the tv. I remember telling the customers what had happened and all of us ended up in front of the tv in the staff room watching it all unfold (customers included). For the next hour or so there were about a dozen of us crammed into this little room hardly saying a word. We all shuddered when we watched the second plane hit. It was a very weird feeling. i remember thinking this must be similar to the JFK assassination and the man on the moon as it was something that was going to change the world forever.

Diana - I can't remember the actual death but remember where i was during the funeral etc. It was GF day and we were celebrating a flag back at the club. The tv had the procession etc on all night. I can't say I really paid much attention to it. I admired Diana's work and understand it was a tragic death, but wasn't so devestated that I felt obliged to watch the funeral.

Bali Bombing: I was in the UK and had no idea it had happened. I was working in the same hotel/restaurant and only found out when one of the customers twigged I was Aussie and asked how I was coping with the Bali news. Obviously it was reported in the UK but did not provoke the same feelings as over here.

Michael Hutchence: I honestly cannot remember.

9/11

I had flown from England a month earlier after a season of cricket over there and was doing a bar course at Tafe that night. Noticed in the lobby the time for NYC on the wall around our 6pm before class. Got home 4 hours later and dad told me to turn on the tv and saw the first tower on fire, then saw the 2nd plane hit, watched it for the next few days non stop, just unbelievable. To live there for years after and get first hand reports, visit the site and live amongst it was surreal. I was caught up the 2007 steam pipe explosion in midtown and experienced a small bit of what they went through that day, albeit as I said a small bit.

Diana

In the kitchen, I was 16 so not that affected but mum was being a pom and all.

Bali

I was playing a west end cup one dayer for prossies vs sturt at price memorial oval. Todd ferguson was the keeper that day and brucey, threaders and geddes I think were at the game and at a break in play, had heard the news and saw those blokes take off to leave. Didn't know about our sturts losses till later.

Michael hutchence

Don't recall but knew it was a big thing by the outcry and all.

Don't know if I've been in this thread yet...

9/11... Is it really ten years ago? I was in year 8 at school, getting ready in front of the telly. Thought it was a trailer for a new action film... Could not believe it.

Diana... Was living in Victor Harbor, watching Back to the Future II, and my brother runs in saying "Dodi's (Dodi Al Fayed) dead! Dodi's dead". Mum changes the channel and it's all over ABC News... She taped (over three VHS tapes) the entire funeral...

9-11
My partner was booked in to have her tonsils out Sept 11 SA time, her mother was staying over to look after the rug rats in the morning, I had just gone to bed (about 11) and the phone rang, it was the father inlaw telling me to turn the telly on...........couldn't believe what I was seeing, about 12:30 the mrs walked through the lounge asking what movie I was watching.

Princess Diana
We were at the show with the kids

Bali
We were in MacKay on holidays

Sorry but the Gulf War started on 2 Aug 1990. Remember it very well...got to my desk in the morning as usual, was handed a pager and sent to the Ops Centre to start putting my war role into practice. Was on call 24/7 doing that and my day job until the aircraft and boys came home in March 1992.

Sorry JAS, I couldn't have taken too much notice before the bombing onslaught on the 17th of January 1991 (just looked it up), that is my first recollection of the war and when it really took over the TV coverage in Australia.

I also just noticed this is a bumped thread and I gave some of the same answers a couple of posts back a year ago
