Another sad fact of the fires is that last week a 19 yo CFA member was arrested for light fires in a different region. Nothing to do with these fires but you would be surprised how many fires are started by firefighters. Haven't seen any fund started yet for donations but if anyone knows where to donate, please pass on the info.

Sad but very very true. I remember reading in the time magazine once about the number of fires in America that were acutally started by fireman. I can't remember the exact figure it was suprisingly a high percentage.

In saying that the CFS do a brilliant job and their work skills saved my life due to a house fire so i can't appreciate them enough.

It was really hard to comprehend the extent of the damage these fires have caused when watching C9's news coverage of the fires. It is unimaginable to me to just see a whole town burnt to the floor. I hope they get the fires under control soon and that no more lives or houses fall victim to the fires. I hope they catch the people responsible for lighting the fires and that they get the book thrown at them.

The news said that if the arsonists are caught they will be charged with murder, so they should too. Seeing how many people have perrished i'd very much doubt the offenders will ever see the light of day again.

5aa just confirmed the deaths of the news reader and his wife.

The fires are the top news story here too. Thoughts go out to all those involved. Hope people remember that no amount of 'stuff' is more important than lives and just get themselves and their loved ones the hell away from it as soon as possible.

This is going to be far worse than Ash Wednesday. They are upping the tally by 5-10 each hour,I suspect they will find alot more as they go through the towns that they have not gotten to yet. Feel like jumping in my car and driving there to help.

I hate Bob Brown and when he comes up with pathetic crap like this, my opinion is just reinforced:

The leader of the Green party, Bob Brown said summer fires would get worse unless Australia and other nations showed more leadership on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

"It's a sobering reminder of the need for this nation and the whole world to act and put at a priority our need to tackle climate change," he said.

from: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7877178.stm

Scores of people die and the best Brown can come up with is this kind of self-serving nonsense
He's as bad as any other minority senator in recent history: Haradine, Family First, etc and I wish he'd just STFU.

Also from the article, previous severe bushfire events:

-16 February 1983: 75 dead, 2,300 homes destroyed in "Ash Wednesday" bushfires in Victoria and South Australia
-8 January 1969: At least 22 dead, 230 homes lost in rural Victoria
-7 February 1967: 62 dead, 1,300 homes destroyed in fires in Hobart, Tasmania
-13 January 1939: 71 dead, 700 homes destroyed in "Black Friday" fires in Victoria
-February - March 1922: 60 die in Gippsland, eastern Victoria

The thing is though this is 25 years after ash Wednesday. With all the resources we have now this is terrible, if it happened 25 years ago i'd hate to imagine the scenario :(

Professor Mark Adams, from the Bushfire Co-operative Research Centre, agrees.

He has been studying forests around Melbourne's dams over several decades.

He says the extreme weather conditions which sparked the bushfires are likely to occur more often because of climate change.

"The weather and climatic conditions recently don't augur well for the future. Bushfires are an important and going to be ever-present part of the landscape," he said.

That is pretty self-serving.

A bit like the hungry media and stupid questions such as 'So you know people who have died, you must be really hurting?'...

Perhaps what they mean is that another effect of climate change is the increase of arsonists.
