30 Years ago, on the 11th of May, 54 fans of Bradford City and 2 from Lincoln City, were killed due to a fire in the main stand of Valley Parade, the home of Bradford City FC.

Many hundreds were injured while escaping the inferno and trying to save those still trapped by the fire. My uncle was one who was injured, he was given a bravery award for pulling people out of the fire...

We were here in Adelaide and my dad happened on the news and saw his brother in the hospital on the TV... thankful that he was OK but just devastated as to what had happened, I was 10 years old and didn't quite grasp what had happened.
He was a tough b@stard, Uncle Barry, and it haunted him until he died 20 odd years later...

There is footage of it and from when the fire is noticed until the whole stand is engulfed, takes about 90 seconds... 90 seconds to try and get 3000 people out... terrifying... :(

RIP the 56.

Yep simply harrowing mate. No person should head off for leisure time to a sporting event and not return home (or return home forever affected). Tragic. Rip the 56.

That is some of the most incredible, yet horrific footage that I have ever seen.

RIP to the 56- what a tragic thing to happen at a sporting event.

Just read a little article on it- it is believed the fire was started from a cigarette butt

Yeah that is what the inquiry stated that is was a cigarette or match thrown on the ground which fell under the seats and ignited the rubbish that had built up over decades. There are actually saying it was an Aussie on holidays but it really could have been anyone.

The stand was due to be demolished the next day and rebuilt for the new season...

Its a very Bradfordian thing to keep this all under stated and remembered quietly though BT Sports in the UK have produced a 1 hour doco with interviews and footage. It is hosted (can't think of another term) by the daughter of the City teams coach.

It is on Youtube as a dodgy copy of the program as you cant watch the BT free version in Oz.

If you want to watch and get an even greater understanding then search "One Day In May the story of the Bradford City Fire"

The bowling centre at Ingle Farm closing suddenly. Bowled there weekly for about 3 years and got to know the people working there really well. Sad to see them out of a job. Walked past tonight and people were still arriving with their bowling bags, having no idea the place had closed down.

Genuine question, why are you certain you have to retire? Are the doctors suggesting you'll never run properly again?

I can't speak for Johno but if it was me it would be a huge mental barrier. Whilst not as serious for me I had an ankle reconstruction last year and I know I will never play competitive footy, basketball or tennis.

How long after the ankle recon were you able to run? I'm six weeks post surgery from my ankle recon and I thought I'd have way more flexibility by now.

I was 6 weeks in a moon boot post surgery. Think I was close to 4 months. I had a few setbacks in physiotherapy with Achilles and plantar fasciitis (still have this).

Doctor says that you can play full contact sports at 3 months but that is obviously geared to lucky people in rehab and professional athletes.

Were those setbacks related to the surgery?

I was aiming to return after 8 weeks, but that might be wishful thinking. I have a lot of inflexibility where I broke the tibia that is holding me back from full range of movement.

Mostly inactivity due to the boot and also readjusting to the ATFL working at full capacity. I probably had full range of movement at 4 to 6 weeks post boot and my improvement was rapid until I went to do a single leg calf raise and my Achilles said no. I was stuck there for another 6 weeks.

My hat goes off to anyone who does a serious injury, knee recon, snapped legs, dislocated ankles etc, and then wants to continue playing.

I had my first knee recon in 1996 playing soccer, took me 18 months to get back and playing, then did my 2nd one (other knee) playing church basketball at MARS and have never for 1 second wanted to play competitive sport again...

Just have absolutely no confidence in either of my knees now..

So again, hats off to you...

Damn. I was kinda naughty and never had my moonboot on at home and was attempting to walk early on, so hopefully I don't have any inactivity issues. Just struggling with dorsi-flexion, but hopefully can bust through that plateau asap.
