only on retirement but our redundancy package also pays out sick leave as part of the EBA
I need to campaign for this in my industry, I have 2 years of unused sick leave!
This only encourages some to take them when not genuinely sick.
Workers should be rewarded for not using them, not punished by losing the amount they’ve accrued.
The reverse is also true though. People are sick, and instead of staying home and resting up, they come to work cause they want to keep the sick day up their sleeve and get it paid out when they retire.
So they come to work crook, do bugger all, stay sick for longer, and often pass on their sickness to other people. And then the company still needs to pay them out as a reward at the end of their employment!
Unfortunately no system is perfect.
