- "The Afternoon Show" with James Valentine

- Hoping to catch one of the plastic footies kicked into the crowd at some SANFL finals

- Taking hangers in the backyard over a beanbag or a strong bush

- Being able to walk to school and never worrying about getting there or back

- Collecting the sticks from the annual Choc Wedge cricket competitions, where you could either win a free Choc Wedge, or collect enough to enter a competition (one year, our local deli sold the Choc Wedge's but wouldn't redeem free ones. Mum rang Peter's about this, and they sent out their SA rep at the time to give us a free box - Port champion, Ron Elleway)

- The annual "head lice in schools" ritual 8-[ . I was very lucky and only had it once, but to this day, the smell of KP-24 brings back memories. Not good ones, either.

- Learn to swim classes. Growing up in the western suburbs and walking to Henley Primary school each day, we started in the Henley Pool and when that closed, the whole school learnt to swim in the sea.

A few years ago I was working at a small restaurant in the English countryside when a large table came in which included Jonno Coleman. One of his mates, picking up that I was an Aussie, asked whether I knew that Jonno had done childrens tv in Australia. I confirmed that he had been on Wonderworld although I was only young and don't remember much of it except that there was a dog on it. Jonno then explained about Woodley the dog and the reason he was called Woodley. Apparently, the dog had a bit of a problem and was in a constant state of arousal .... hence, Wood-ley!! Reckon he may of been pulling my leg!

Going "Around the World", "Walking the Dog" and "Rocking the cradle"

( I just found mine - and I haven't lost my touch ;) )

They'd be worth a bit now, wouldn't they?
Don't play games with a girl who can play 'em better...

Depends what sort, FC. There were three main variations - Super, Championship and Special Spin (the latter were only around a while). Coca-Cola original 80's Russell Yo-Yo's can be worth a bit, common to see them for around $25-30, depending on the era. Some of the late 60's, early-mid 70's ones, around $60 plus in good nick.

Some variations on Coke - particularly the hard to find Mello-Yello ones - can be more like $80 plus. EBAY usually has a good number on there of the Coke varieties. My uncle has a big stack of these that he bought as a kid and kept in top nick, sitting on a goldmine.

Playing "boats" with paddle pop sticks in the gutter out the front after a big summer storm has broken a heat wave.

Backyard cricket in the front yard with the whole street involved.

Kicking the footy with a kid you didn't know but just happened to meet at the park / school oval that day. Then being best matyes for years after wards. Would you let your kids :
1 : Be at the park on their own at 10 -11 years old?
2 : Would you allow your kid to bring home another kid whom he just met at the park?
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

I watched CSI Australia last night and it was about the Beaumont Children. Here's Mum sending the three young children down to the Bay by themselves with the oldest at what, 11 years old? Couldn't believe it. During the 70's when I was that age I didn't go down to the beach with my sister on our own.

I used to walk through Hurtle Square by myself every day to get to school (Gilles St Primary) and I'm still alive!

Also used to go rollerskating around the grand prix track with a friend by ourselves when we were 12/13... and go and kick footys and stuff in the South Parklands

(Yep, I grew up in Carrington Street FYI)

I was 10 years old living in Novar Gardens and allowed to go to the Bay by myself by bus in 1982.
I knew the bus system and my way around and not once felt in any danger.
Now the father of 2 girls aged 14 and 11 there is no way I would allow that.
Maybe the same reason so few students ride bikes to school these days too.
