"playing basketball in a thick jumper on 40 degree days"
That is one of those odd things that always prompted me to check for signs of incipient psychosis, along with bizarre colour combinations in clothing, and bizarre make up.
None of these are diagnostic though and don't appear in the symptom lists in the diagnostic manuals.

Then there is a study from the University of Qld, in about 2005 or so, that suggested regular MJ use in those under 17 increased dramatically the incidence of later psychosis.
It is also well established that MJ and other drugs can generate psychotic episodes in an otherwise only marginal person at any age.

That said, I've never been a fan of "not guilty on the grounds of insanity".
I've always favoured a pragmatic two step approach:
1. Did the person commit the offence and are thus guilty?
2. Now, are there mitigating circumstances that should be considered in sentencing?

The Chills
Strange Case

He feels them all watching, alone in a crowd
He sees only targets who whisper too loud

His mother has gone now, survived by her son
A soldier of fortune, an unfortunate one

I told them, I told them
To leave me alone
They were laughing at my voice
So I silenced their own

Never trust a man with camouflage gear
Never trust a man with camouflage gear
He's hiding from something, enjoying your fear
Never trust a man with camouflage gear

They're moving in closer
In darkness they hide I'm really not frightened
And I'm ready to die

Never trust a man with camouflage gear
Never trust a man with camouflage gear
Never trust a man with camouflage gear
Never trust a man with camouflage gear
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

The last patient of mine who regularly wore camouflage gear was both prone to auditory and visual hallucinations and a transexual.
That said, it is not a recognised in the literature diagnostic sign...

There were a few other issues, and at one time ASIO wanted to interview me about this person too - and eventually did with the patient's consent..

My ex-husband's father used to wear that stuff all the time. And not see anything odd about it. That being said, he was an ex-Green Beret and the war messed him up pretty badly. When I knew him, I could hardly believe that he'd been an elite soldier - he was a retiring, gentle, vague person, who would just about walk over broken glass to avoid any sort of emotional confrontation, and used to drink himself into a stupor every night. Everyone treated him as a bit of a sympathy case. One time he came in to the room where I was reading and reeled off several episodes of his wartime experience and how he still had nightmares, then went back to the lounge room and passed out and shat himself. But when I spoke to Mr McSpaz about him, he had surprisingly little sympathy; he said, 'He was a Green Beret, he volunteered to go to Vietnam. Twice. My dad's a pacifist and he was drafted and it ruined his life. This bloke was at My Lai and now he's paying the emotional price. I find it hard to feel sorry for a person like that.'

The rest of the family wore camouflage gear fairly often too, but that was just because they liked to hunt deer a lot. :?
