They really were floppy unlike the more rigid 3 1/2" models, but fortunately, I can afford regular upgrades...
To be serious, when I bought my first computer in 1987 two 5 1/2" floppy drives and no HDD was still common.
I went for,
"the massive 20MB HDD you could never possibly fill" at $200 (which is probably equivalent to $2000 in today's money).

I first looked at computerising my business in 1984 and got several quotes for around $14,000.
In 2007 I enacted the same plan for $2750 all up.
(You can multiply those figures by 10 to approximate today's money.)
