Yes they have been a bit of a nuisance when I have been fishing in Tasi a number of times. They do seem to take a real dislike for you, I only wear good thick waders out in the creeks and lakes there.

I am also worried about the dogs. Has anyone had any experience with the solar powered snake deterrents that you put in the ground and they send shock waves to deter their presence?

This is very interesting. I heard on the weekend that veterinary clinics sell them for $100 or something stupid but I'm told you can get them online from Hong Kong for $6. Expert opinion is divided as to whether or not they work so I'd happy to hear some informed for's and againsts

Good point scoob. One of the blokes I bowl with went away in his caravan last Christmas and inadvertantly took two brown snake hitchikers with him. First night he pulled up and went to the cupboard to get some stuff he saw the brownie which darted off. While he was getting his .22 out of the overhead locker another one slithered past. He chased and shot both of them but admits he didn't sleep to well

You would want to make sure they don't take refuge in you house to get away from the vibrating ground

I remember going to a bucks show about 5 years ago and on the way we ran over a browny in the car. Turned around and decided to take it with us for the night. Apparently the stripper didn't appreciate it being slapped around while she was doing her show!

But, personally I use the shovel method to get rid of them. I have a 65,000L pool in my yard so that seems to attract them from the sports ground over the back fence. Just keep the long handled shovel in the pool shed handy. Still scary every time I do it, but I'd rather take on the risk myself than risk my family getting bitten.

I live at Hallett Cove, Last summer, got home to see my dog come flying around the corner with a 4 foot Brown snake in his mouth and him thrashing his head around using it as a toy. Then before i could get outside, he threw it 2m away and i watched it stand on its tail and launch at him. I dragged him inside, and watched this snake try jump my 1.5m fence, which it struggled to do with a bite mark right in the middle of it.
Called the snake catcher, because i shit my pants, with how it was jumping. He arrived, took him 1 minute to pick it up, fold the bag up, throw it into his car. The charge $155.
Wont be making the call again. Spent the whole next day barracading the yard. Im very lucky that i have a Samoyed, so the snake would either have to bite his snout of foot to be able to penetrate his skin or its ends up with a gob full of white fur. Couldnt think of antyhing worse then to come home and find my dog sick, or even dead because of a piece of shit snake bit him why i was at work.

Most snakes will leave you alone if you leave them alone.
The main exception is the Western Taipan, although Tigers have been known to actively attack if you are between them and their refuge.
I've known Copperheads to be aggressive at times too.

When I had a farm in the Hahndorf area the most common snake there was the Red-bellied Black.
There were a couple of times I almost stepped on one dozing in the sun near a dam.
Each time we looked at each other for a few moments, then both slowly backed off.
I took to stomping around in my wellies setting up lots of vibrations.

We did have a cat that took to catching them and bringing them home.
One, I had to kill as it was under my wife's car and the cat had lost interest in it.

I lost my Burmese cat to a snake bite in March 2010. Devasted the family. The vet told me dogs on average will survive between 20 mins and two hours from brown snake bite while cats will hang on for between 12 and 20 hours. Both can be saved if you get them to the vet in time. Expect to drop $700 to $1100. The signs of snake bite are evident quite early, pets go in the back end within minutes so that's the signal.

Yes. Our local Vet said our cat was either very skilful or very lucky as cats are particularly sensitive to RBB venom.
She was probably lucky I didn't kill her when she started leaving them on the front door mat.
(It wasn't easy to tell from inside the door whether they were dead or just playing dead.)

Stone Hut Bakery hey SP.
Grabbed a snag roll last week from there. Sorry 3 snag rolls, 2 were for home later.
Go through there every 6 weeks with work and the snag rolls are by far the best on the planet.

I don't worry about myself or Ms SP but I am always concerned about my dog and cat. Last year I had three browns (that I saw) go through my house. God knows what goes on here when I am out. My mate 10km up the road had a death adder on his patio while my neighbour 100 metres away found a very rare pygmy death adder asleep next to his fridge. The National Parks and Wildlife officer up here reckons the best insurance you can have against reptile intrusion is to continually bait for rodents. Which I do. Any other stories or advice?

I hate snakes.....I currently live in Penang, Malaysia and I work over at the Malaysian Air Force Base in Butterworth. I have been here since January and we have has 5 King Cobras in our building this year!!

If you're between a tiger snake and where he wants to go, watch out. they are shockers. had a couple run ins with them out fishing. one day with my uncle, one of the bastards was swimming across the river and we could see it coming and it ended up going straight up into the boat and over the other side. didn't go around the boat, just straight over it. I crapped myself.
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep
Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?
No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

That one obviously only stops Cobras, and they are barely venomous at all compared with Australian snakes.

Best thing really is to do nothing at all, people that successfully kill them generally have plenty of experience first usually from being on the land. Attempting to shoot a snake with a rifle is unlikely to work as most people would need several shots at close range to get anywhere near it, a Shotgun is a far more effective weapon due to the spread of the pellets. In regards to the spade a long handled one is more likely to work and in my own experience I have seen someone go at a snake with a long handled axe which worked far more effectivley.

Key thing is even in a suburban backyard to keep down the long grass and restrict them access to pets water bowls and so on. If they are in your yard they are looking for either mice or water they wont stay long if access to either of those things isnt there.
