Didnt read the camping / off-roading bit.

Do not buy - Holden Captiva, Toyota Kluger, Mitsubishi Outlander.

Consider - Ford Terrority Diesel or LPG, Prado, Landcruiser.

seriously don't consider a terrority they just ain't worth the hassle.

The reason fords are cheaper second hand then holden is because of the fleet cars. There is more on the market which brings down the price on them, and I would strongly advise of not buying a second hand fleet car

Ive got a Captiva in the diesel, and really happy with it.

Has great fuel economy, usually under 8L/100km, and hasnt skipped a beat.

I bought it knowing i wouldnt be doing any serious off roading, and have used it mainly on sealed roads, but do occasionally use of road. Enjoy being off the ground just a bit more than a sedan.

Why does everyone think that the abovementioned cars in bold are different cars?

A Prado IS a Landcruiser

The correct description is Toyota Landcruiser Prado, NOT Toyota Prado

Just thought I'd clear that up ;)

I don't blame you footy chick the raa are known for classing cars at different levels to make more money, they are usually pretty good when you question them about it though and make the changes.

It's not RAA mate, it's the Glasses guide..

I asked our friends in the tech advice area...

They are different vehicles Lisa, but Toyota still group the Prado under the Land Cruiser name. The Prado has probably become more stand alone over time, and maybe Toyota just call it Prado more so these days but Glass's guide still has the Prado listed under Land Cruiser model description. It's similar to Land Rover Discovery, Land Rover Freelander, Land Rover Defender etc.

So I was wrong but right at the same time  ;)

I have owned a Territory for 3 years and never had any Issues with it. Handles great can be a little petrol hungry at times. But keeping mine well maintained and serviced it runs a treat.

I don't know your circumstances fish, my friend.. :D

Think about puting the money into your own property...?

And buy an older vehicle.

And drive a little slower/more carefull. :D

I think you said you are responsible for 3 young boys...

How fabulous is that. :D

They would far more appreciate a property inheritence than an old car down the track.

Property grows in value, cars do not. :D

And as your relationship grows and gets stronger and stronger with time, you may be in the situation that you can buy a car of your dreams,

through the capital you have built up in your property.... ;)
Smile :)

That depends on what you call camping, I used to take a Sigma wagon with Mrs Ian, Jnr Ian, the dog, the back full and trailer loaded, to semi off road camping sites in Lyrup Flats conservation park regularly. Sometimes people dont realise what the average family car is capable of so long as you drive accordingly. Dirt tracks don't need a 4WD.

Funny how people always reckon the car they own is the bees knees & everyone should own one.

Nearly all of the current batch of cars on the market have some issue or another. Sometimes you get lucky or the problem does not surface or is not evident to the average driver.

When you own a vehicle, maintain it as required including servicing by someone who knows what to look for ( an oil change in the driveway doesn't cut it).

i.e When was the last time you had the transmission oil & filter screen changed ? Expensive job if you don't look after it.
What are the suspension bushes like in the back of your Falcon /Territory ( $2000 job by the way, and common!). I could go on.

Generally, your car is your second biggest investment and the one you lose the most money on !

Whatever you buy/own is going to cost to maintain , ALL cars do.

True, the Sigma Wagon was the vehicle of choice for Jack Absolom in his exploits around the Flinders Ranges too! :D
