I'm using a compact Canon SX10 iS for travelling.
Its 5-100mm optical zoom (35mm equivalent 28-560 mm) is fairly good and it has selectable image stabilisation and automatic contrast enhancement settings.

The fact that it will run on any AA batteries is handy if you are off the beaten track.
I notice Lumix and Sony have recently brought out models with more than 20x optical zoom, but your need to be able to recharge the batteries in those.
