"Transport Minister attacks Qantas actions, questions maturity of CEO Joyce":

“I find it extraordinary that a board meeting should have suddenly decided on this course of action this morning less than a day after it held an annual general meeting.

“There has to be planning involved in this. I leave it to those who know how aviation operates to ponder the timing of this.”

Minister Albanese said the disputes between Qantas and its pilots, licensed engineers and ground staff were capable of being resolved by mature adults.

“I made it very clear to Mr Joyce that I was very disturbed that we had conducted a number of discussions with Qantas during which no reference had been made to the possibility of such action being taken by the airline,” he said.

Albanese also made it clear that he had been in close consultation with the CEO of Virgin Australia, John Borghetti, following his conversation with Alan Joyce and that Virgin Australia had undertook to make every effort to step into the breach caused by the Qantas groundings with additional capacity.

While the Minister was expressing his lack of confidence in the Qantas board and Alan Joyce, the Vice President of the Qantas pilot union, Richard Woodward, said he knew that Qantas had booked thousands of hotel rooms world wide in advance of its action to ground all of it international and domestic flights some weeks ago, and had been negotiating replacement flights with Cathay Pacific up to several months ago.

Woodward said the Qantas action was in his opinion premeditated and well planned, and queried Joyce’s stability, describing his performance this afternoon as ‘bordering on the maniacal.”

I'm thinking he should join a union ;)

This is an act of bastardry, by a boss who just got a 70% pay rise, now on $5 million, who wants to take the company offshore.

He'll only get support from those who support the top end of town over the workers.

(Oh, and those on here who have turned on their auto-pilot and whine out the usual "it's all the government's fault).

Not good, Mr Joyce.

They turn that over in a day so hard to lose that much as a profit. Its missed turnover. Profit is from their last figures closer to $600,000 per day.

This is such a stupid action.

As bad as some of the claims of the unions, in particular the pilots, this is monumentally ridiculous.

You work through a few stoppages , delay to flights and negotiate, shutting down the whole business will just give all the punters no confidence in Qantas.

You think Qantas struggle to pay a dividend now , they won't be paying one for the next 5 years after this.
If at first you don't succeed , then destroy all evidence that you tried in the first place

Excellent move by Joyce !!!

Total respect ..... Unions have to many radicals in them with over the top demands.

These people need to be thankful they even have a job in this climate .

BTW .... I thought the labor government said the liberals with have more strikes if in office???

What a weak as p**s government we have at the moment .... At least Joyce had the balls to actually be proactive and do something !!!!
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!
