On the other hand there have been a number of cases reported in the US where people have been executed and there has been no doubt, but the later evidence not originally available - like DNA - has raised doubt.
I have mixed feelings about the death penalty at all, and I'd certainly want to restrict it to proven repeat offenders.
I'm not sure of current figures but up until 2005 14 people on death row (awaiting excecution) were exonerated and released when DNA was introduced to their case.
