The inhibiting factor there is cost.
On the other hand there have been a number of cases reported in the US where people have been executed and there has been no doubt, but the later evidence not originally available - like DNA - has raised doubt.
I have mixed feelings about the death penalty at all, and I'd certainly want to restrict it to proven repeat offenders.

I'm not sure of current figures but up until 2005 14 people on death row (awaiting excecution) were exonerated and released when DNA was introduced to their case.

There are reasons why I agree with capital punishment, but it will never come back. Not in this day and age.

Capital punisment is all well and good until you get that one person that is innocent incorrectly convicted and then killed for a crime they did not commit. Unfortunately we don't live in a society we're we can know for sure and as such I disagree with it as a punishment. Its probably tougher on the poor sucker to be stuck in a cell for the rest of his/ her life anyway.

I think that's a fair call.
The government doesn't like "no early release" - the cost per day of keeping someone in gaol has always been pretty steep.
I am a little sympathetic to the concept of a death penalty for really horrific crimes, and repeating violent offenders, but one has to be very sure about the convictions.
There have been a few wrongful convictions here and abroad over the years...

I'm keen if I can choose the crimes that carry the penalty.

It takes a special kind of hypocrisy to denounce murder and then justify murder on your own terms.

Exactly ... how can one type of murder be illegal and the other lawful and sanctioned by the State?

I'm a fan of Sharia law, its very difficult to be a thief or assault people with no legs and very difficult to murder again with no head  Amputations on habitual criminals is an alternative to the expensive process of keeping them in prison. Horrific murderers could have all limbs amputated and then released, their own bodies would become the prison - of course these extreme punishments should only take place with 100% no doubt of guilt. Judicial caning could be a viable cheap alternative to prison for relative minor criminal offences. Those who identify as indigenous would become subject to traditional punishments such as spearing. We could empty the prisons!

Which leads to the brutalization effect, higher murder rates and a less safe society.

If the majority of argument for Capital Punishment is cost then you are fighting a losing battle, it was proven to cost more to keep someone on Death Row than it is to jail them for life.

I'm not sure of the exactly how much more it costs but I believe it is in the vicinity of ten times the cost.

I guess the obvious solution is to execute them promptly on conviction and not keep them in costly accommodation long - perhaps ban appeals? ;)
