It will get through, TSG. The Greens will control the Senate after July 1 and in the Reps it will be supported by Oakeshott and probably Windsor at least.

Once it's in, it will stay in.

its another socialist tax that lefties justify in their own way. The Greens have about 15% of voter support so that means 85% of us don't support them and their freaky looney ideas. Surely you'd have to think about this.
Caution! You are now entering the no-spin zone...

It's a socialist tax that the Conservative government in Great Britian have just announced they'll also bring in.

There are currently over 30 countries that have introduced it.

Your maths also don't make sense, DV. You can't presume that everyone who didn't vote for the Greens opposes them. They got into Parliament by getting enough votes (far more than the National Party)..

It's called democracy.

"Millions win in carbon tax plan: Labor"

LABOR is preparing a multibillion-dollar carbon tax compensation package that could leave up to 2.6 million low-income households better off and a further 1.7 million middle-income households no worse off.

It is believed that the spending, funded out of revenue raised by the new tax, is likely to be delivered using a combination of tax and welfare measures, including lifting tax concessions for low-income earners and targeting tax cuts to help families on middle incomes.

A senior government source said Labor had failed to sell the compensation package offered under Kevin Rudd's defunct emissions trading scheme and was determined not to make the same mistake this time.

''It wasn't well understood last time that a lot of punters wouldn't have been worse off and heaps of them would have actually been better off,'' the source said.

''[This time] we will put a lot of effort into selling the assistance package because it can help counter Abbott's dishonest cost-of-living scare campaign.''
