I say we leave it as is - what is with the Australian public and the desire to run down significant parts of our nation?

It's like changing Australia Day because it doesn't have enough significance to Indigenous Australians.

January 26 is our day.

Advance Australia Fair is our song.

And lastly...

I've never understood the attraction with having Waltzing Matilda as a national anthem. As a song, it's fine - but to have on show to the world as our national song? Would be like the USA adopting "Gangsta's Paradise".
Can you guess where I'm calling from, the Las Vegas Hilton...

"We Are Australian" just IS NOT anthem material. It's a nice enough song but can you imagine standing up in a crowd and all singing it to stir up the patriotic spirit? Don't think so. I am, you are, we are Australian ... nup, nice sentiments but not an anthem. Anway, how would we look if our anthem is from a TV Commercial.

Waltzing Matilda could be set in any country. It's a song about a man who steals sheep.

For whatever faults it has, Advance Australia Fair is an anthem. Maybe it's not the best one but it's ours.

Maybe if the AFL told it's players that singing the anthem is not optional (ie, it's more important than showing off your intense face on national TV) kids may step up and sing along more. I think our culture is that if you sing the anthem you are a bit of a goose. We should be proud to sing it. Do they still teach it at primary school?

I'm a Waltzing Matilda man at heart because I don't think a national anthem needs to be grandiose or taken very seriously - we should be able to laugh at ourselves.
But I don't mind Advance Australia Fair - I just wish people would sing it in a lower register instead of a falsetto.
