9/11 - sitting right where I am now. I was at the pc writing an essay for a college course I was doing and had the tv on in the backgriund. It was 'Keeping Up Appearances' and about 2:30pm. The programme suddenly stopped and those heartstopping words 'we're interrupting this programme for an important news announcement'. Turned round to see what was happening and there it was...plane No2 live on air...rest of the day was pretty much spent in front of the tv and on the phone to friends.

Diana - didn't like her so not bothered but if IIRC it's something like 31st Aug which would have been a bank holiday here. When I got up and put the radio in the kitchen on they were going on about someone having been a fashion and style icon blah blah blah and remember thinking that sounds like Daina and then they repeated the announcement...she was still supposedly injured at that point.

Bali - obviously didn't really affect us as much as you guys and I do remember all the news coverage but I'm afraid I don't remember where or when I heard it first.

Michael Hutchence - wasn't a fan of him or Mrs Geldof so I don't really remember that one. It's probably her death that would have got more coverage here so it'd be that I have a vague memory of I think.

9/11 - Was working at the Riverland Field Days. My first job out of uni and I was staying in the Berri Golf Club Motel. Flicked on the tellie and saw 'WORLD AT WAR' as the headline, scared the living bejesus out of me. Remember going to work on a stall and watchin people just wondering around the field days, like nothing had really happened, it was very surreal.

Princess Di - Was at Grandma & Grandpa's in Loxton watching the final round of the 1997 season, Adelaide v Essendon I think. It was Mark Harvey's last game and we lost by a couple of points if I remember rightly. The news flash came on at the 3 quarter time break. Mum was devo, she was a massive Di fan.

Can't really remember where I was for the rest.

9/11 - temporarially at my parents' house and woke up to the 6.30 alarm on MMM breakfast with Jars, Grant Cameron and someone else talking about it. Went straight to the TV and couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Bali - in my car on a rainy Sunday morning and heard it on the radio.

Dianna - doing dishes at my old place watching the Crows v Essendon when the news flash came on

Hutchence - it was a warm Saturday morning and I remember going out the back in a bit of shock but I can't now recall how I heard about it. Some of the recollections about when people heard this news don't sound right given it was a Saturday morning.

9/11 - Was lying in bed and heard on the radio that they thought a Cessna flew into the one of the towers. Got up, turned on the TV and then watched the 2nd plane fly in. Like quite a few others, spent the next 5 or 6 hours just watching the whole thing unfold.

Bali Bombing - Can't recall exactly where I was, but once again, could not believe it.

Michael Hutchence - November 22 1997 - the Day I got married. I now understand, Michael.

9/11 - I woke up about 7:00am and was watching an episode of Prisoner that I'd taped the night before on UKTV. It was a scene in Governor Anne Reynolds' office (she was on the phone) when scrolling along the bottom of the screen was 'Terrorist attack in the US, turn to the news channels for more info'. So I stopped the tape, flicked over to Sky News just expecting a fire in some building with a few injuries/deaths, then saw the footage of one of the towers collapsing. Spent the next week watching Fox News when I could (only time I've ever watched Fox News for that long).

Ironically I was doing a Social Studies assignement at the time where we had to analyse 3 consecutive nights of news - 9/11 happened on night 3 of my analysis (the first night was mostly boat people/Lleyton winning the US Open and the second night was mostly the Ansett collapse so it was an unusual week of news as it was).
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

Was living in the Riverland at the time. My dad rang up in the middle of night to tell me what was going on and we sat glued to the TV until morning. Teaching the next day was very eerie - the kids were scared but fascinated and wanted to talk about it, everyone was just in disbelief.

9/11- School Work experience at a cabinet makers factory. We turned up the radio louder than usual to hear absolutely everything including John Laws getting on his high horse about the situation during his daily show.

Diana's Death- the Sunday arvo footy was interrupted for this......

Bali Bombings- Was a Sunday and was at a cricket pre-season training most of us there new a couple of Sturt blokes over there and I only realised it was a bit more serious a couple of hours later

Michael Hutchence- was about 12/13 years old I think I was fishing with my dad after playing cricket in the morning.

9/11: Woke up to ABC Radio reporting it and while bleary, thought for a short time that it was a play, almost like "War Of The Worlds". Turning on the TV quashed that thought. Walking through the CBD that day to work was eerie, and when a plane went overhead, almost everyone looked up at once.

Diana: Out in the garden, listening to the radio, which said at first that she was sitting up in bed, chatting to visitors.

Bali Bombings: Out shopping and heard it on the car radio on the way.

Michael Hutchence: In the pool in the back yard, when my sister came out to tell me. That one probably hit me more than Diana, growing up with their music as a soundtrack to childhood and through high school.

9/11 - I first saw it on late night news. Spent much of the night watching. Then at work, myself and another journo (who has gone on to bigger and better things) discussed it all morning before heading off to the Riverland Field Days. Was a bizarre time, just like Ginger pointed out.

Diana - In the car heading to the Royal Show with my now wife and her parents (heavy royalists), which resulted in me pi**ing myself laughing. Very sardonic, I know. It was an eerie day at the show too.

Michael Hutchence - I can't really remember. I remember being at home from uni and watching the funeral though. That Serial Pest goose got in there. Nick Cave played into my arms.

Bali Bombings - on the way back from a footy trip in Hahndorf. We'd stopped at the Swan Reach Hotel when we first heard the full details.

I remember I was on my way to Berri with a mate and his parents for an under 15 final.
When we heard my mate stuck his head out the car as we passed through town and yelled "The b*tch is dead!".
Not very nice at all, but as a kid it was p*ss funny!

For 9/11 I too was watching Talking Footy at home and it just switched, without warning, to a shot of the first tower smoking. Saw the second plane hit live as well as the two tower collapses.

The next day or so I was doing weed control in Brownhill Creek right next to Adelaide airport and it sure was eerie and a bit scary watching the planes flying over. Needless to say I got visited a lot by the security patrol that day.

Well, I recall it being discussed at school the next day, myself. Turned out that day was cloudy, giving that eerie effect.

I turned the TV to Channel 10 for Sports Tonight to find out how many weeks Matthew Lloyd got for his "Grandmas' kiss" headbutt on Darren Gaspar. (Yes, this was back when the AFL interested me much more!) It went from an advert straight to the smoking tower scene. Couldn't sleep for a few hours after that.

Also, probably one of the more weird atmospheres I've encountered was on the following Sunday. That day I ran in the City to Bay (the only time I have done), and I remember going through the city, and the only sound you heard was feet on bitumen. Nothing else at all. I don't know if that's always how it is at the start of those events, but again it was cloudy. I think the previous Tuesdays' events cast a pall on that.

As for the others, I can't rmember about Diana or Michael Hutchence, but the first I heard about Bali was the 6 o'clock news on Sunday - seeing that street scene with fire and darkness, thinking nothing much of it at first glance. Until finding out what it was all about shortly after.

I remember the coverage given to Dianas' funeral, and how the Crows/Eagles semi final was pushed back to Sunday afternoon so every station could broadcast the funeral! I think most twelve year olds found that Saturday evening boring! That was not long after the Thredbo landslide, and how Sky News on Foxtel covered that like Beaconsfield, and Port Arthur with continuous footage.

9/11 - I was at my girlfriend's house watching tv. Remember seeing on tv that the first plane had crashed and thinking that's weird - maybe the pilot had lost the plot, but never thought anything about terrorism at the time. Got home and then turned the tv on and watched through the early hours of the morning before going to uni the next day. Was such a weird feeling for days after.

Diana - Dad picked me up from cricket practice at Adel Oval and told me on the way home she had crashed. Not long later heard she died.

Bali Bombings and Hutchence don't remember.

I remember I was in the Family Room at Mum and Dad's when I heard Bradman died.

I remember hearing about the Tsunami on the radio the next morning in a caravan at McLaren Vale while on a golfing trip.

I woke up early in the morning for some reason, and turned on the TV news and heard it had happened.
I spent the next few hours waiting for the report that the Yanks had nuked someone in retaliation.
It was a relief in a way that they couldn't actually pin the initiators down to any specific location.
