I agree. A healthy scepticism of both sides is healthy.

I know someone who takes on every single conspiracy theory and becomes so involved to the point of paranoia and delusion. I think that's unhealthy.

I wish our governments were as organised as some conspiracy theorists seem to think. Look at the official documents that get leaked around the world on things far less important than 9/11 (for example) yet I am expected to believe these conspiracies can get covered up for decades even if many, many people would have to be in on it.

Yes, I've been reading ancient and medieval history and the history of the 100 years war.
It appears that what happened then as now was a product of the shambles of short-term, ad hoc, decision making.
Some things never change.

I have thought that Port Arthur was a conspiracy theory for years.

Pearl Harbour = War
JFK = War
Port Arthur = Gun Laws
9/11 = War

How does Pearl Harbour fit in there?

I know their are reports the US ignored warnings about an attack but are you suggesting that they collaborated with Japan to attack them?

Or, they wanted to be attacked so the American public would want to go to war.

I'm pretty sure the US of A blockaded Japan's supply lines, which is why they attacked Pearl Harbor.

7-dog you are suggesting the Australian Liberal Party organised and sanctioned the cold blooded murder of 35 people? And not one single person involved has said anything publicly since including Martin Bryant?

It would be life imprisonment for everyone involved. They could have just introduced gun laws into parliament in the normal way because there's very minimal issue the voting public have with the gun laws these days that I am aware of.

And they wanted to take out the US Navy in one fell swoop

Why would the US Government risk losing their entire Navy just to get the American people onside to go to war? They could have arranged for a japanese looking sniper to kill some ageing senator to fire up the American people!

These conspiracy theories get so lost in the conspiracy that they fail really basic logic tests IMO.

What justification woud the US have to drop the bombs without the attack on Pearl Harbour?

Who says they were waiting for justification? If they so desperately wanted to enter the war they could have on the Allied side well before the attacks on Pearl Harbour.

There was lots of pressure placed on the US Govt by Churchill to join the war as Nazi Germany slowly took over Europe 1939-1942. The UK was left fighting on its own almost. Japan were aware of the threat the US posed when and if they joined the war so they went proactive about taking out the US Navy figuring I assume that the US joining the war was inevitable, which I think it was as the war clearly become more than just a European civil war. Japan eventually would have posed too much of a threat to US security as they spread through the Pacific.

Basically while the will of the US public was against joining the war I think it was inevitable and Japan game them their excuse. The entry of the US into the war made the end result inevitable as Japan and Germany stretched beyond their means.

Maybe a WWII historian can help us here.

The yanks weren't as big a powerhouse back then either. If Hitler wasn't so power-hungry and stayed allied with the Soviet Union, WWII could have well been a different result. IMHO.

I agree

It seems like WWII created the powerhouse that the US is today. They saved the day.

Had Hitler not invaded Russia the result may have been different however in his vision of Nazi Germany the Russians were sub-human people that would basically act as slaves to the German people and all the Russian land would be used to produce food to feed the Third Reich. So it was inevitable in his deluded plan that Russia had to be overrun. It was his downfall.

I think there's about 10 threads spread across the SANFL, AFL and cricket boards on this. So do we need this thread to be hijacked or can you contribute to those threads?
