I'd occasionally wondered if it had roots in the excitement early railway engines evoked in the 19th century, as it is probably a better mimic of the sound the horns made than Toot Toot.
It has existed in varied form for a long time despite various modern assertions about its origin.
Variations come and go - it was around in my childhood in the 1950s.
