*BUMP*

I still stand by my stance of hating private health because I think it's a scam, however I now find myself coming of an age where I'm likeley to get slugged by NOT having it.

Is anyone around here cluey enough to let me try and explain the costs at time time if you don't have it, compared to paying $1200 to have it?

I signed up with HCF about a year ago.

Costs a lot, but it can, and definitely does, come in handy.

Would also like to know a little more about taxation implications/advantages in having Private Health.

it's one of those things at the time you probably don't think it's a waste of money until you need it. Most companies these days are aligned to a fund that gives you a discount. I have always thought of it like car insurance, you can go years without using it but you have it because if something does happen your covered.

I've never heard of tax implications, but there probably is for some people. Probably best to wait until you get your tax and ask what implications and benefits there is for you.

Don't have it, and not really interested. Majority of my in-laws are nurses swear against it.

If something serious happens you get the same treatment regardless if you are private or public...
Went through the public hospital for the birth of our first, wouldn't change a thing for the 2nd. Didn't cost us a cent throughout the pregnancy, but in private you lay down heaps of coin for the same service...

More was trying to go along the lines of " Well I'm turning 40 this year" what's the extra charge to me at taxtime as a loading if I don't have private.

Again - I think private is a scam and even though I'm going in for my second private hospital visit which Im paying for upfront, I still reckon I'm well ahead of what I would be had I forked out $1000 per year for insurance.

I have it. Was great being able to stay in hospital for almost a week with Mrs G after #1 was born (Caesar with minor complications).

For those who dont have it, put aside the amount you would be paying if you did. For most people this would almost work out the same when you need something done.

Got PH, did my ACL within 6 months of getting it.
Paid $50 for my stay in hospital, $50 on initial consultation & about $150 on my MRI.
That's all I paid for my entire reconstruction (which costs about $5500) & I got it done pretty much right away (within a month of diagnosis)
So right now I'm about $5k up on my Health Fund, I'm sure they'll peg it back tho! I still use it for chiro, physio, massage, etc. Usually it gives me 20-50% each.
So worth it whilst playing sport IMHO.

we have it. quite expensive ($320 a month after rebate) but you can't put a price on private health if a family member becomes ill or requires urgent surgery for an injury etc.
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep
Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?
No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

My fund recently de-mutualised and sold out to Avant - the costs and benefits stay the same and I got $5600 as a payout from the sale.
I'll be watching them though, and if the quality of cover starts to slip I'll move on.
My insurance cost me $2190 this year (just for myself), but it is a good cover at this stage.

I don't think I would have gotten my Prostate surgery as quickly, nor as good a surgeon, in the public sector.
In fact, since my cancer was low grade, they may not have offered me the option of surgery, but just Radiotherapy.

I preferred to play safe and go for the surgery, having worked in a Urology team at the RAH at one time, despite the federal government propaganda campaign asserting early detection through PSA testing, and surgery rather than conservative treatment don't prolong life with low grade Prostate CA.

(It is probably true if, like most you are not likely to live more than 10 or 15 years after the diagnosis anyway, but my family tend to live well into the 90s and I'm batting for a good century.)

I've always had private health insurance because I want to be able to choose what I think is the best treatment from the best doctors in the field.
I had two Urologists doing my Prostatectomy as one of the guys from my year assisted my primary surgeon.

My step-daughter, who is a nurse with private cover, had a Plastic surgeon assist her ENT guy when she had a neck dissection for secondaries from a Salivary Gland cancer.
She got prompt surgery, and a thorough but very neat job done.

My wife and I have Blue Ribbon Extras cover with Medibank Private, and thus far we haven't needed to use it apart from out yearly glasses upgrade. We pay about $85 combined per month for the peace of mind.
